Need a OD pedal

Hi--can you recommend a good inexpensive OD pedal to help improve the tone of my Marshall JMP 50w reissue at bedroom volumes? Don`t want an attenuator and I may end up putting the Metro 'Lar/Mar PPIMV' into it, but would like to try a transparent-type OD pedal first. I am not looking to spend alot of money as i already in buying this amp--yikes! I already have the Dano TOD and it`s ok just alittle too 'middy'. Plus the Marshall itself is pretty loud w/ the volume barely on and the TOD isn`t quiet either--they both are loud w/ their vol barely on! I prefer something that isn`t stuck in the mids like the TOD is--something a little more neutral. I was thinking maybe a Boss that doesn`t have too much gain--just some 'easy' OD...I just don`t know much about pedals. Thanks for reading this and for your help.

Visual Sound (makers of the 1-spot) make a TS 808 sounding pedal, that's worked well with every amp I've tried it with now. It's the Double-trouble, and has two overdrives that you can stack. Really solid pedal, sounds great, and about $150 or so.

I took it out and jammed some SRV fairly convincingly with my 1x12 Gibson tube amp. Worth a look.

Re: Need a OD pedal

I'm no expert on OD pedals but I've owned a few over the years. I got a Rat2 when they first came out and I never got on with it so for many years I've relied on the overdrive in my footswitchable Laney amps. Last year I got into using OD pedals through the clean channel of my Laney VC30. After a lot of research on Harmony Central and other places I got the Boss OD3. I also got a Blackstar Drive pedal with a single pre-amp tube in it. The Blackstar was way more expensive but I've come to the conclusion that I prefer the OD3. It sounds great and it's more versatile. I'm going to a jam night at a local pub tomorrow and I'll be taking my guitar and the OD3. It's very easy to get great sounds out of it through virtually any amp including some pretty horrible cheap solid state amps I've run it through. So - the OD3 for me. Not too expensive, versatile, more gain than I need but it's good to have it, SERIOUS volume boost if you need it, doesn't screw with your original tone.

Re: Need a OD pedal

If you just want a boost,Barber LTD.
If you want mild to med overdrive, Fulltone OCD,Lovepedal COT or eternity.
If you want a JCM 800 in a box, Lovepedal Purple Plexi or Himmelstrutz Fetto.

Re: Need a OD pedal

SD1 or Blues Driver are my recommendations both available relatively cheaply s/hand

the barber ltd is a great overdrive, not loads of gain but plenty to push a slightly dirty amp to sing of give you a decent and responsive tone at lower volumes. you should be able to get a used one under $100. if thats too much a boss sd1 or digitech bad monkey are decent for their price

Re: Need a OD pedal

Rocktron Austin Gold is a nice one...bit of a highs spike, but that helps to cut through if you like darker clean tones.

Re: Need a OD pedal

Spend the cash (about $150 used) and get a ZVEX Box of Rock...great OD/Dist pedal and the built in boost is killer as well.

Trust me...

Ha Ha! Thanks! I took the advice of those here and another forum and going to try to 'Bad Monkey' first as I think/hope it will get the job done--haven`t heard any bad things about it actually.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help--a very cool and helpful group, so a big 'thank you' to everyone. I know that I`ll have more questions and need more help and it`s great that I know all of you will definitely help me! Awesome--thanks alot!

Re: Need a OD pedal

I've heard some good things about some of those Danelectro Cool Cat series (not the old chorus) od's and the digitech bad monkey. Although I think most OD's are better at boosting a dirty sound rather then making a marshall sound marshally at lower volumes but doesn't hurt to try and I think all these pedals would be useful for louder applications.
