Need a Schematic...

I have a set of Vintage Stack Telecaster pickups and I would like to have an option, either by push-pull pot or by mini switch, of "turning on" the bottom coil of the pickups to give me more output and beef. I realize, that by doing this, I'm going to lose the hum-canceling function; but that's okay.

I have seen this in the past but can't quite remember....

If I remember right...

The stack pickup's lower coil is actually wired out of phase.. They work together in series to cancel radiant hum that way. But the top coil picks up a lot more energy from the string than the bottom coil so the music doesn't completely get cancelled out. So if you short out the lower coil, the output should go up. I don't remember which color wires they are.

If you wire the top & bottom coils in series, but swap one of the coils phase, you will have an even higher output, but noisy, single coil...

... that is, if I remember right.

I can't remember the wiring either... It's something like sending the green to a switch instead of grounding it or something. I just can't remember....

It's probably quicker just to try than to track down a schematic...

Short the white/red pair temporarily to ground.. If the output goes up, then you got it. If the output gets softer, then temporarily short the white/red pair to hot instead of ground. If either of these produces more output, then you are good to go. It cuts out the bottom coil, and what's left is just the top coil, which should be louder.

That's an adaptation of the DMZs for certain situations ... For the SD stacks ... Miller relayed to me that the black and white are the top coil, ...
so with one pole of a switch ground the white and red ... black to hot and green to ground as normal. Use one switch pole for one pup, and another pole for another pup.

do you mean to use an "on/off" single pole-double throw switch ... with one throw (side) for neck pup and the other throw (side) for the bridge?

No, one pole common (or throw) for the red and white connection of one pup, and one throw ( or common) of the same pole for ground.
Repeat same on a separate pole for the other pup's red and white, and the ground connection. You have to use either a DPDT (two poles), or a DPST again two poles ... DPDTs are much easiser to find (and more useful) ... you just don't use the other throw on each pole, so it functions like an on/off switch ... it's either open, or it closes and routes the red and white of each pup to ground ... but when open the red and white of each pup are kept separate and not *linked together* ... Comprenday Operandous? ... :laugh2:

Well, if I would have bothered to open the box the pickups came in, I would have found that the Power Boost Option was included in the schematics provided...

Cool.. that confirms everything.

That schematic flips the phase of the white/black coil, giving a lot more output... Alternatively, just grounding the white/red connection (thanks Kent S.) will also give more output, just not as much as the phase switch will.

I assumed that Butch just wanted to kill off the bottom coil, ...see what can happen when you read the instructions ...LOL! Cool!

Wait a minute though, I just caught something, Butch wrote *turning on* the bottom coil ...???? It should already be on in normal operation .. I think he meant turning it off, which is what I gave him in my response. Just so we are straight on that point.
