Hello guys

...so, after a lot of time playing with this guitar, i´ve decided to swap the emgs for a set of passives... i think i got bored to death of this pickups

i mean everything is ok if i´m going to play with loads of distortion and all of that, but i´m getting tired of having to take another axe if i want to play some kinda john mayer tune, blues, good clean sounds and things like that...and i wonder how much better could this guitar sound with a set of duncans

i bought this guitar with that 81/85 combo from the guitar shop, and i thought it was weird for a bc rich custom axe to have emgs on it, cause every axe from the custom shop on this brand came with dimarzios installed instead of emgs (at least the other 2 i bought)

the real problem is which set should i try, cause theres no way of finding any choice of Koa wood on any brand "pickup picker or tone wizard", here are the specs btw:

neck thru construction 24" 3/4
maple neck, koa wings, walnut in between (i think)
ebony board, 24 frets
stop tail bridge

when i asked the guy at the shop for a new set i get that "oh, put there a tone zone/paf pro set and you won´t be disapointed"...all i can say is that i had those on another bc rich, and they were boring, i changed them for a Jb trembucker/59 neck, problem solved... but that one had alder wings instead of koa... i don´t even know if the sound of koa wood forwards to the dark side or the brigth one, so i can´t decide on any set yet...

which set would you recommend me?

any info about how does koa sound like?

thanks a lot in advance

Custom or JB. With all that maple they'll both be crunchy. Custom for rythm/lead, JB for singing leads.

Thanks Pierre...so i can say then that koa is a warm wood, can´t i?

Would be any problem with the output if i choose the Custom over the JB?

What about the neck pup?

Thanks again for the help

Custom/'59 or PGn. What do you want from the pups? do you like some artists tone (to copy that or to at least give us a clue on the type of the tone) Do you want something that is not completely different from the EMG's, or do you want a vintage PAF sound, or...? And the neck pup, how hot do you want it ?
Are you going to use this axe for blues/rock/metal or bit of them all?

...well i´m not into any artist tone at first... i want to have an output similar to the one from the EMGs, but thats all i want to be close to their sound rigth now... i´m not into a vintage sound at all xDD...

about the neck pup, i´m looking for a "PAFlike"/modern one that could do great cleans by one side, and works well with something like sweeps or speed leads...
i don´t want a ceramic on the neck, thats obvious, but i am not concerned about any neck pup with that magnet (EMG60 is the only one i know) so...

thanks a lot for the help

In a neck though guitar you won't hear THAT much of the wings, mostly the maple.

Hi! First of all... you have a smokin axe! Awesome guitar.
Koa has a warm sound similar to mahogany, with just a little more brightness.
Well, if I had a b.c. rich guitar, I think I'll go with the classic Di Marzio Super Distortion (maybe Super II) and Paf neck.
The Duncan humbuckers that I tried and really like are the Seth Lover and the Antiquity. They are very vintage sounding, great for classic stuff and for clean and crunchy sounds.
Did you buy your b.c. rich in Spain? Or did you order it from the USA?
In Italy, where I live, they are IMPOSSIBLE to find... : (

thank you dude for the info and kind words about the guitar...

yeah i´ve been finding also some info about the dimarzio choices, they have a couple pups that seem pretty interesting, the D Sonic and the Paf Joe...

and yes, i bought this natural assasin and another one with floyd and a smoking finish...the guy at my nearest music store is really nuts, and went to NAMM (he does it every year btw) and bought 6 o 7, 3 assasins, a couple mockinbirds and so... anyway you can send a mail to your dealer and ask about to get one off their stock...

edit: i tried dozens of sets with that one, Live Wires, TB4/SH1n4c, the original Dimarzios TZ/Pafpro,the PA Distortion trem/Jazz... i keep finally with the JB and the 4 wired '59

Great call!

By the way - you MUST change the rings and go double cream. Awesome axe!

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

aaah...i´m not quite sure of that... i don´t want to turn the guitar into a PRS, i has to keep killer and smart ;)

btw thanks a lot guys for the help...

the Custom is right there waiting for the neck pup... it seems i´ll have a hard time deciding which one to get... i used the samples on the web, with the 59n, the PGn and the Jazzn for helping my ears to decide for me xDD... but i´m not quite sure, it seems like the jazz has way more treble detail than the other ones...
