Need a String Mute

What do you guys suggest using for a string mute? My pop band that I mentioned before wants to try a cover of Muse's Dead Inside and the bass part is all muted, so rather than trying to mute after each note, I'd figured I'd put a mute under the strings for this song only. Anybody got a suggestion for what I should use? I'm trying a piece of foam that my X-box was packed with and it's okay but not the greatest. A lot of the notes still ring out a bit.

Re: Need a String Mute

I use a cut piece of sponge, Doesn't damage the finish and costs virtually nothing.

If you are going to want a mute on a regular basis, consider installing the old type MusicMan bridge. This had adjustable mutes built in, one for each string.

Re: Need a String Mute

I just cut a piece of foam from an old microphone case and slid it under the strings next to the bridge.

Re: Need a String Mute

ive always just used foam between the bridge and bridge pup. cut it a little thick so it puts decent pressure under the strings. sponge would work fine too
