need a very versatile pickup

ok, im gonna get new pickups for my charve(H-S-S, floyd rose).

i originally had an sh-5 in the bridge with teh stock dimarzio neck pickups. but the sh-5 got destroyed in a freak pickup change accident(long story) and now have a dimarzio super distortion in there. i already know what im going to put in the neck and middle positions. im gonna put a lil 59 in neck and an ssl-1 in the middle. this is my main guitar and use it for everything i play so i guess i need a versatile bridge pickup. i'd like to get a nice sweet, singing lead tone as well as a nice chunky rhythm tone that can rip your head off if im in a metal mood :headbang:

what would be a nice versatile bridge pickup?

my first ideas were:

JB
C5
CC
DD

so what do you guys think?

Re: need a very versatile pickup

a DD with a coil split... the perfect riffing pickup for metal, and sounds very stratlike split... I'm not a big fan of the DDs unsplit cleans (few are), but split it and you'll be more than fine:D

if that's the case i'd just see how you like the DD. no sense in buying another pickup when you've already potentially got all you need.

I agree with the reasoning above... however, if you look up "versatile" in Webster's, at some point is says "Seymour Duncan JB."

Re: need a very versatile pickup

It kind of depends on your amp. If you have a high gain amp setup, you can go with something cleaner like a PEarly Gates, 59, Screamin Demon, or even something from the Custom series. If you need to push your preamp hard, I'd start with something at least as hot as a Custom, a JB, Full Shred, or a Distortion.

Re: need a very versatile pickup

well i got a marshall avt 150 but i use more of a crunch rather than a massvie wall of distortion that comes with an amp like a mesa boogie triple rectifier :D

i like the distortion in my les paul, ha s nice singing lead tone in it with a nice chunky riff monster tone!! but a les paul is different from a superstrat...

i'll see when i buy the lil 59...

Re: need a very versatile pickup

Cacn't go wrong with the DD. I've got 5 of them, including one in my Charvel. Best metal riffing pickup ever.

Re: need a very versatile pickup

Don't find the Distortion very versatile myself, it's ok for metalrhythming in certain woods but I think it has a thin leadtone...
Can't say I don't like it at all but I have my doubts. Currently my faves are the custom and JB.

Re: need a very versatile pickup

Of all the hot Duncan humbuckers, the C-5 is the most versatile IMO.
Tight bass and well balanced, so it'll do everything from sweet clean stuff to tight palm muted highgain riffs. It's just like people describe.... like a 59 with tight deep lows and expanded output.
