need advice on 10" speaker

Re: need advice on 10" speaker

Please check out the field report on tonetubby.com for the 10" alnico. Here is an excerpt from the October 2003 Tone Quest Report:

His latest version of the Hemp Tone Tubby features a super lightweight, copper-clad aluminum voice coil that will permanently silence critics who have claimed that the hemp Tone Tubbies were too dark and lacking treble. We received some of the first 10" hemp Tone Tubbies with the new voice coil (initially developed for Eric Clapton in an effort to eliminate the subtle dropouts that can occur when extremely subtle, soft passages are played on a big stage with a band). The hemp cone Tone Tubby 10's are utterly magnificent, with an incredibly solid bottom, fat mids, and gloriously detailed, creamy highs. Uncork these bad boys and you'll hear rich, textured harmonic overtones that you've never heard before.

Re: need advice on 10" speaker

i was still getting tqr at that point and i played the tt ceramic 10" in 2006 so it was the newer version. just not for me. love the alnico 12", the ceramic is pretty good too but the 10" ceramic i tried just left me wanting something different. im sure the mix of the alnico and ceramic is very nice in a super.

i subscribed to tqr for a few years, cool rag but their opinions are just as biased as the reviews in guitar player. they do review cooler gear than almost anyone else though.

Re: need advice on 10" speaker

I totally agree with you about bias in reviews, unfortunately we suffer the wasting of time and money when the gear doesn't live up to the hype. One size does not fit all but I am finally pleased with my amp sound after being underwhelmed for the past ten years.
I am just now finally happy with the Super Reverb Amp that I restored (with help from pros), this amp replaces the amp of my youth... a Blackface Super Reverb I bought used when I was 15 and kept for 14 years until it was stolen from the trunk of my car one night. Couldn't afford to replace it until now. Used a few other amps but Super is my all time favorite. On the magazine good side Guitar Player helped educate a young musician on the basics..from the buyers guide that helped me to buy the right amp in the late
60's, how to care for and maintain an amp, how to string a guitar...stuff that newer guitar players don't appreciate.

Anyone try the Eminence Alpha A's? I just found out that is what is in my Raezer's Edge cabinet and I love the tone even thought it's only an 8". Might have more to do with the cab being ported for extra ass resonse. Ayone tried these speakers 10 or 12 inch in a combo before?
