Need Advice On The Shiva

Someone on the gear page told me about a cool mod on the Shiva where you can put a jumped connection on one of the transistors.

Does this work? Does it sound good? Anyone tried or know anything about this?

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

I'm curious as well, since I've always thought about trying to do the same thing on the Jubilee, just to see if it backs the gain down and makes it sound close to a regular JCM800. The diode clipping circuit is the whole reason the Jubilee has a singing lead tone and tight low end chunk. Still, it'd be interesting to bypass it and see what it sounds like.

I thought the Shiva was 100% pure tube path. Are the transistors an additional gain stage? I don't know that much about the the Shiva.

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

hmmm maybe I meant RESISTOR

My terminology might be off
I just heard it might open up the amp AND gain it up a tad?

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

I don't know about it, but I wouldn't touch the inside of that amp. I've learned "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" ;) I dig the sound of it now, I'd be stupid to mess with it.

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

All I know is that the stock Shiva has one of the most godly lead tones I've ever heard.

Yeah I agree........... Why mess with a great sounding amp!

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

i wonder if they are talking about shorting out the negative feedback resistor ... that can often times open up an amp that sounds a bit 'constipated' ... but it can also unleash a holy terror or uncontrollable gain

be careful under the hood of theat beast - lethal voltages in there

good luck

hmmmmmm maybe that's what it is

He said short the 470k resistor coming from the gain pot.

Look, I think the Siva sounds AMAZING. I have finally had a chance to take it out A LOT as of late - and at band level volumes it opens up and does what I would call a PLexi meets JCM800. I frankly prefer Plexi style gain with a pedal to the JCM800 overall, but this amp kinda seems to nail the 2 put together, and it cleans up pretty well (not as well as a Vox or PLexi, but damn good). The clean channel is GORGEOUS, and I actually prefer it to most Fender gear I have sued (Twins and Supers).

I was just seeking out wasy to gain it up. Since someone said it would open up the amp, I perked up thinking - you could open up a Shiva more than it is already? I know peopel say they sound compressed, but at the right volumes, the bloom, sustain and feel are quite open to me.

I would never do tech work an amp myself. I solder like a special ed 5 yr old.

:laugh2:

I haven't played the new version of the Bogner Shiva that started shipping in May, but from what I've gathered, the overdrive channel is a bit more open sounding now and has a bit more gain. Might deliver what you're looking for without modding an older Shiva. As tempted as I am to do that mod to the Shiva, I'm not going to touch a thing because I like what I have and shorting is generally a thing that I prefer not to run into on electrical circuits.

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

Yeah, I am dying to hear the new Shiva

Knowing Bogner, they are brilliant marketers. They would never devalue their older stuff. I assume this one is a new flavor of Shiva such that you will either long for the old sound, love the new sound OR - end up wanting to own BOTH.

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

One wonders if you could have an older Shiva retrofitted with the new circuit to get the new sound without having to trade anything. He's geographically close to OlinMusic anyway in general terms. It shouldn't be too much of a leap for OlinMusic to leave it with Reinhart for a while and let the man work his magic on his older model for him.

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

I've been to Bogner a few times, and must say Charley is the nicest most helpful guy. I would go so far as to call him a friend, and hopefully we will jam. A couple of my friends also work with a couple of people there.

The thing with Bogners, and I got this from the shop, is that the Shivas are built around a PC board design, with almost everything mounted on the board itself. Therefore, if you have the amp SANS reverb and wish to add, or you want to mod it, there are many limitations. I think the same goes for the new circuit - just can't be added. I am NOT A TECH so don't quote me.

I really don't care. I like a lot of amps, but the Shiva and Ecstasy have made my head spin many times. they sit in the mix perfectly, record like a dream, and I have worked with a few producers as of late who have answered the "not in my studio" thread very well - these amps are welcome.

Mic-ing and getting a great tone and feel with low use of EQ and compression is simple. They work well both on studio and stage with Marshalls and Fenders (which most people I know by far prefer, even the Metal heads). I would only say that I would not be sure how the 5150 would fare for metal. I would think it would be fine since a lot of people are going back to using JCM800s on some pretty hard tracks. Other than that, I would still see the 5150 and Dual Rec as ruling that turf.

The only real "flaw" in a Bogner is that you can't be drunk and sloppy when you play. Man, those amps expose you! LOL

Re: Need Advice On The Shiva

I've heard your tracks, so I know you aren't a drunk or sloppy player. You do good work.

I forgot that Bogners are PCB. I usually associate boutique with non-PCB builds and that tricked me this time. You probably mentioned the PCB earlier in the thread, but I totally forgot it.
