Need Advice regarding "GARY MOORE" TONE

HI guys

I'm very new to this forum..hope u guys can give me some pointers and advice..i was wondering if seymour ducan carries any Humbucker which sound close to the tone of Gary moore's gibson les paul. the one that peter green gave to him....My axe is a Epiphone Custom les paul...the pickup i'm using are the stocks..and they sound very muddy and weak....i'm not sure whats the wood of my guitar though....

Hard to say. When I listen to Peter Green with John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac (that's Peter's old Les Paul that Gary plays) sometimes his tone sounds like a Duncan 59 to me. Kind of clean and bright and not so midrangey and woody as alnico 2.

When Gary Moore plays he uses alot of overdrive and Peter's old Les Paul sounds alot fatter and thicker than when Peter had it, and a little more like they might be alnico 2 pafs!

I think I'd go for either some alnico 5 Duncan 59's or some alnico 2 Pearly Gates. The PG's are based on the pickups in Billy Gibbons old Les Paul which was made within a year of Peter Green's/Gary Moore's. The PG's are alnico 2 pafs but they are wound to be a little brighter and more harmonically alive than most alnico 2 humbuckers.

The Antiquitys, which are built to replicate the sound of a 50 year old '58 paf would also be agreat choice. Especially if the dealer was willing to go through thier supply and pick you out some hotter ones.

Chances are your body woods are mix of Alder, Mahogany and possibly maple for the neck.

I do think that Gary's LP has a slightly different wiring scheme in that one pup is reversed, however I believe that mostly affects tone in the middle middle position (please someone correct me, elaborate if needed)

However, any of Duncan's "PAF" styles should get ya there. 59's, Seth Lovers & Antiquities being the closest match since they are all based on original gibson buckers.

My new Gibby LP Std, with BurstBucker Pro's is very close as well to that tone. I was playing (err....butchering?) Parisenne Walkways last night through a Soldano model on my Vox and with some tweaking I was prolly as close as I'm gonna get without being Gary himself.

However BBP's are much more expensive than most Duncans and I'm not sure they sound any better (no worse, either in general).

I would recommend the 59's. They are going to get you very close to the sound you want and are the least expensive (assuming you buy open coils).

Thats right...the out of phase tone only works in the middle toggle position, now that said the neck pickup is up side down which will make the neck position sound a tad bit brighter.

Makes sense.... Lews recommendation of a PG is prolly a really good one then sinces it's top is a bit brighter.

Peter's playing and the tone of that Les Paul on that cut is easily in my top five favorite guitar performances. You could probably find it on CD. It's a great CD but that one tune is worth the price of the CD. Lew

VERY TRUE MY FRIEND! I love that tone BTW...have you heard Gary do the Supernatural? It is also Killer...he used Peter's LP, and an Orange stack...WOW!

It is on CD. I have a copy of it, which I bought a couple of years ago and there is a used copy at a local store. You should be able to order it if your local stores don't have it.

Gary did a whle album of Peter Green stuff a few years ago. It's called BLues For Greeny, and IMO it is Gary's best work. He does overplay a tad, but I guess it's part of his style...he's still got a little bit of hard rocker in him! It's a great record, he does the following tunes...

Love it! I've got all the old John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac stuff on vinyl.

I also have a live version of that tune recorded by Fleetwood Mac in Boston 35 years ago or so. It's a cool version too. Peter introduces it by saying something like: "Here's one about the devil..." :saeek:

I saw Peter do that tune a couple of years ago live at the Boulder Theater. THAT was a cool show! A double bill with Peter Green and the Splinter Group and John Mayall with Buddy Whittington on guitar.

Peter's playing is a little more tentative than it used to be and he's obviously a little fragile, but when he sang Green Manalishi it gave me chills. Sounded exactly like I remembered it.

They did a very respectable version of it live.

COOL! I have the FWM recording, 5 or 6 different FWM live disc's with it , 3 version of the Splinter group doing it, as well as covers of it by Judas Priest, the Melvins, and one or 2 others...I just love that song!

I like ALL the PG FWM stuff, but that tune just gives me chills when I hear it...I've heard it a thousand times and it still gives me chills!

When BB King was asked which of the British blues Players he liked best everyone expected him to say Eric Clapton. But it was Peter Green that BB said was the "THE ONE". And BB said that Peter's playing "gave me chills."

Greeny is one of the greatest. Such a sensitive player, who is very big in manipulating the volume of the particular notes he plays. That definitely gives him another dimension in which he expresses himself.

Fleetwood mac has a box set of their early recordings, 6 of them I think. And in that box set they have lots of versions of the songs they recorded for each of the albums (including the album-takes as well). Listening them told me that the guys simply plays with his heart. He hardly played the same way twice! And all is good.

I know that lotsa fellas here don't favor his outa phase tone, but I love it. Especially that on need your love so bad, gives me the chills.
