Need even mroe Floyd advice

A few months ago I stripped the threads on my floyd (80's Schaller made thick baseplate model). Bought a new baseplate, the thinner Lockmeister version, as it was the same price as the thicker model (they still sell both). Now damn guitar wont stay in tune. Its mostly on the low e and g string. Guitar is tuned to C. Never had stability issues before. Any pointers on what I should look closer at? Maybe its fixable?

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

first, you didn't have to replace the plate. I have done 2 floyd plates with v-coil and it worked super good on about 70% of cases (saddle holes) and OK on the rest 30%, so yeah it means this takes some practice.
Now, since you got the new plate and put everything back, what are the possible causes :
- rough knife edges - problem with the plate : Do you still have the old plate?
- loose nut installation
- loose intonation saddles installation
- slipping strings inside the saddles

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

In addition to the good advice above try applying chapstick liberally to the contact points of the trem posts and knife edges. I do this with all new locking trems since when new they are a bit stiff. I've recently bought two Ibanez's with Edge trems and initially pull-ups come back sharp. After the chapstick they both return perfectly.

If you want to test the locking nut go ahead and lock it down and while dive bombing ping the headstock side section of the strings, it should not change pitch, if it does something is slipping at the nut. If you changed the mass of the bridge the tension on the springs may need to be readjusted to make sure the bridge is level. Good luck.

Thanks for the pointers, i'll look into it.

I've already adjusted the string/spring tension, so I know thats not the issue. And the coils are not a bad idea, but finding them around these parts is a bit tricky.

I have been using Chapstick at my bench as a lubricant since the 80's. Cherry or raspberry flavors work best, and keep the guitar smelling interesting.

I could not find them in Athens either, so I bought them off ebay.

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

I don't own chapstick i guess because I am male, but white lithium grease seems to work well.

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

Go easy with that stuff. If it gets in a hole or routed edge with no finish, it can discolor or lift the finish.

There’s nothing wrong with keeping your lips kissably soft year ‘round.

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

I bought a baseplate direct from Schaller Germany for an old USA Hamer that had stripped, think it was around $30, easier and cheaper than repairing the old one. The new thick plate Schallers have hardened threads or inserts already, so that sealed the deal.

Unfortunately, it's to late to send mine back and swap. And I had heard the LM bridge would drop right in.

cheaper? no way. The repair kit costs about the same price, and you can fix all your past, present and future floyds (and also gotohs/ibanez's/other designs).

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

Tried your advice, guys. Guitar is better now, still not as good as beore, but better. Also tried to swap locking clamps around - the old ones have some very minor grooves in them, in my experience not enough to cause slipping, but who knows? Not sure where to take it from here. I could order an original spaced thicked baseplate from Schaller, but I don't really think that's where the issue is. If it was, all strings would get throw out tune, wouldn't they?

in sub-optimal situations I try this :

NO MODS to your guitar : ultimate tuning stability.

Re: Need even mroe Floyd advice

E and G are the most sensitive to bridge movements. Do they both go flat or sharp? Or does one go sharp and the other flat?

Flat. And mostly seems to happen when diving, not too much when pulling up.

maybe the new plate does not fit with the stock pivots/studs. Do we have the old plate? or buy some new compatible studs? or just go and buy a Gotoh and get it done once and for all?

I think it's the same measurements for all parts except base plate thickness. And the knives are still same size as the old ones.
