Need Good Amp Tech

Hey guys, anyone familiar with a good amp tech in the northern Calif area close to Sacramento? I have a Bogner in need of minor work and I have a friend with a 66 Bassman head that needs either caps or tranny.

I've had bad luck in the past with random repair shops.

You guys got any help for me?

a "good" amp tech? Rare as hens teeth. Random repair shop? You'll get ripped off almost certainly.

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Thanks guys. Yeah I know I'm looking for hen's teeth.

Jeremy, I'm not familiar with ANY amp techs, so there isn't any name recognition at all to me. But I trust your judgement enough that I would certainly trust any of my amps to a recommendation from you. Wish you weren't 4000 miles away and/or knew someone in my area.

ZZ, thanks for that info. I'll PM you to find out more.

Anyone else got some recommendations for me for this area?

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Where in Cali do you live? If you're near Orange County, I know a guy who has a favorite amp tech over there.

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Sorry GilmourD, I live east of Sacramento. But thanks for caring enough to chime in and offer some help.

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Awaiting an answer from somebody very much in the know from right around that area.

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Doug Kauer put the feelers out and came up with this info for ya. Hope it helps. :p

From my buddy Dave who gets amps actually worked on in town:

"Kinda depends what they need. Shane Manning at Tubesonic is good with basic stuff, but if it's at all oddball or vintage, Skip Simmons is unquestionably the master. Yeah, you have to drive up to Marysville, but your amp WILL be fixed and fixed correctly."

Wish I could help–I have an awesome amp tech in Decatur, GA but nothing in Cal.

I do have an uncle who plays bass guitar in Cal but he is near San Fran/Modesto area...

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Just found a good one in Camarillo but that probably doesn't help you. Found him on yelp, which is great for a lot of stuff

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

I need exactly the same thing!!! Just on the other side of the country & up north a bit? There's nothing around me for hundreds of miles! The closest place I could find was in Concord, I live in the Mt. Washington valley in NH. It's like driving from Buffalo to NYC, same state but it's a a long frigging way! I've come to the realization that I'm going to have to either take a trip or drop some serious cash on shipping to have my amps serviced, if that's the case I'd like to know they are going somewhere great, not to some D-bag who has watched a few YouTube videos, bought a multimeter, & works out of his parents garage! So if anyone knows of someone who really knows their stuff in the north east please let me get a name & number!!!!

Re: Need Good Amp Tech

Is this your Bogner Alchemist? If so, what's the issue/symptoms?

Yes. It's been a long time since I've played it so I may not remember exactly, but I think the main issue is when it warms up there is a long delay from when I step on the foot controller until the action takes place. Like when I step on echo or channel/gain, it may take several seconds before turning on/off. I installed a couple fans inside it which seemed to help somewhat (very little), but still too much of a delay to be able to use the amp.

When I get a chance, I'll put it through it's paces again and try to nail down precisely what is happening.
