Need help...relating to my new carvin...

OK, so, I'm trying to install my UGD pickup in my carvin. Problem is the pickup is too wide for the hole in the guitar. Yeah, the pickup is TOO WIDE for the hole.

CAN YOU ****ING HEAR THAT CARVIN!?!??!!?!? MY REPLACEMENT PICKUP IS TOO ****ING WIDE TO FIT THE DAMN GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rant: how can a company get off by doing this? how can a company be so paranoid that they FORCE you to use ONLY THEIR PARTS AND EQUIPMENT!?!?! Next ****ing thing they'll try is to make their own special output plug so you can only use carvin guitars with carvin amplifiers. (end rant)

Ok, so, im calm now. But I seriously need help.

First off: This is pretty much the only company I can possibly go to to get myself a 7 string thats to my specs and affordable. Sending it back isnt really an option.

So...the SD pickup i have is too wide for the pickup slot in the top of the guitar by about one millimeter.

I could either make the route on the guitar bigger, or I could try to take a bit off the sides of the duncan. Neither seems like all too attractive of an idea.

So...a little advice would be greatly appreciated. What should i do?

You could put the baseplate of the Carvin humbucker on the SD humbucker. If the screws line up, it should be perfect.

If only that were possible. Carvin uses a different sort of base plate with their pickups. Its a plastic material and it seems to be glued to the bottom of the pickup.

your 7 has no pickup rings right? do they make aftermarket 7 string pickup rings? perhaps get some rings (if you can find them) for all 3 and then shave what you need to shave off the guitar and add the rings to hide the area you had to remove?


actually can you post pics of the problem...perhaps we can come up with other ideas before you go cutting away at something lol.

I got a 7 string ring from UGD, that might work. only problem is i've already drilled for bigger screw holes in the SD pickup, so that i could mount it to the body like the other pickups. That was before I realized what was going on.

well i found you custom 7 string rings if you wanted them....

the clear rings there would look cool...or the polished.

also since you drilled them you can use a combo of a machine screw (fine thread not a wood screw) and a nut and superglue the nut to the bottom of the mounting hole you drilled and that will work as the threaded area.

OK, well, I found a bit of a simpler solution.

Take off The tape

I **** you not.

It fits now, but i've got a little exposed wiring. SO, i've got some extra pickup tape lying around here, i'll see if i can just tape off the ends.

wait a second...the tape stopped it? now i'm confused, i thought the mounting feet were the problem or the pickup base. wtf lol how much tape did you use hahaha.

lol, seriously, it was the width of the pickup, like "from-the-direction-of-the-bridge-to-the-direction-of-the-neck" style width.

It just had as much tape on it as any SD pickup, I didn't actually wrap it on there when we were buildin it at the factory...

Now it just *barely* fits in there. Though, problem #2, the neck pickup has a DC resistance of 0. yeah, thats a short. Wasn't the switch that was wrong with it after all, though that doesnt explain why the middle pickup wasnt quite working either...

Probably won't need P'up rings for the 7, though some of the stuff there looks pretty cool, might pick up somthing for some of my other projects.

That of course is gonna have to happen after I sell my roland-ready strat to pay back my parents for the money they loaned me to buy the EBMM (a big thanks mom and pop to that one), and after I buy a new 7 string '59 4-conductor p'up for the neck of this one.

Tell me about it man...I'm dying for a pedalboard. Fulltone OCD, a wah, volume pedal, phaser, and reverb. Throw in GAS for a Marshall-type amp and a new cabinet. I'm still in debt for the RR-1 as it is. :smack:

If you don't have a dremel tool, wrap some sandpaper around a popsicle stick, and carefully run it back and forth in the route.

As for the shorted pickups, just check all the connections and wires.

Worst case scenario, you may have to pay one way shipping to Carvin, along with your pickup, and get them to get the whole thing working. Shipping is probably $28

i've always heard that only carvin pups fit in carvin guitars without modifications...i guess that still holds true?!

Yeah, Carvin can be a biotch about that! I called them a couple years ago inquiring about a guitar, and they said they absolutely could not route the guitar to fit other manufacturer's pickups. What bullcrap! That's borderline dealbreaker right there (but you're right, that IS a sweet-ass guitar otherwise, and reasonably priced).

Anyway, I E-mailed carvin about the measurement specs of their 7-string pickups, and they're basically identical to the measurement specs of Duncan's 7-string pickups.

length and width of 7 string bobbin0: 3.17in x 1.32in
thickness .60in thickness
overall length (from metal foot to metal foot) 3.7in

length and width of 7 string bobbin0: 3.071in x 1.384in
thickness .766in thickness
overall length 3.701in

It's that extra .064 of an inch that's giving you the problem! :yell:

No real problem with that, at least they routed deep enough . It seems to work OK once i take the tape off, but its still real tight. I'm probably gonna wait till I get a '59 neck pickup before I try to install em though. Discovered I had to flip the magnets in the SD's too before it would be hum-canceling in positions 2 and 4. :smack:

They really dont seem to like the idea of somebody putting different pickups in their guitars...
