Need help with my future DSL100H

I am getting a new DSL100H and I have read that it needs a boost in order to play songs from bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, so I would like to have some advice from fellow guitar men.

Thanks

I can't comment on whether you need one, but it's always good to have a boost/OD around, even if you get the rhythm sound you want from the amp, they are nice to have for solos, when it needs to go to 11. Just grab a Boss SD-1 or Tube Screamer and you'll be set. There are plenty of other good choices for boost/OD out there, but those are kinda the industry standards. Set the distortion low, goose the output, and adjust the tone to taste.

Remember also that actives like the Blackouts and EMGs employ a built-in boost within the pickup.

I don't think you would need a boost with that amp, wait and play it for awhile before you decide. Otherwise, a Boss SD-1 will sound great.

Definitely play the amp first. If you need a boost, go shopping at a store that has the amp, so you can try them together right there.

Personally, I think some players insist on more gain for playing classic thrash because they're lazy and aren't bringing the aggression with their pick hands.

+1

My Jubilee has less gain than a DSL and I'm able to play classic thrash without a boost as long as I'm using a hot pickup like the JB or Custom.

If you have to ask this question about that amp, you need to read less and play more. (<= Wisdom right there)

The ONLY problem I'd have sussing ANY tone from 30 years ago out of that amp would be a minute to get gain/eq settings just right. Might not quite make it for anyone using a Boogie. Otherwise the problem isn't going to be the amp.

I have the 40c you can get metallica pretty good with a les paul but boosting some does help with picking dynamics/some gain also. The crunch boosted is very nice also. If your pups are not too hot go for it

Re: Need help with my future DSL100H

Green crunch with a pedal is most ballsy, but red 2 is most gsiny and tight.

for old thrash , H type mag speaker is critical. h30s, 12-80s, or similar. Thats the sound of early metallica anyway (pre puppets).

Re: Need help with my future DSL100H

I have the same head and play very heavy and dirty. The amp has more than enough gain to do anything you want with it. That being said I do use a variety of boost pedals with mine. More for dynamics and tone shaping than gain.
