Need More Power..!!!

I have a Marshall MG30CFX amp..(I know..heard it all before..its Junk.POS,Great Doorstop etc.) I play with a heavy handed drummer,and even with the amp
off the ground up on a stand, its hard to be heard..unless I throw a house mike in front of it. The amp has a 10 inch speaker in it,and its 30watt output.
I was told if I installed a quality 12 inch speaker that it would give me +3DB and give more output..!!??? Is this true..?? Being a SS amp,is their anything else that I can do to get a little more out of this amp..?? Any info will help. Thanks.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

Eh, I know you've heard this before but you need to buy a tube amp. A 15 watt tube amp will crush that thing. I wouldn't put a new speaker in it, I'd just start saving now and put the 100 bucks for the speaker towards a used tube combo.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

Stop! Your Marshall has a ten inch speaker. Are you going to operate on it so a 12" will fit? Or are you going to get a speaker cabinet?

Think about what you are asking.

A better speaker will improve your amps sound somewhat; however, I suspect it will not give you the volume increase you desire.

+1 A new (good quality used amp) amp should be in your future. Since you dont specify style or what sound you are striving for, I'll throw out Peavy as an amp line to check out.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

I have a Marshall MG30fx basically the same amp you have but older version of it and yes it's not the loudest amp their is and even I only use it for small gigs and practice. Once I seriously started gigging out I knew I needed more power and a bigger speaker and went with a Blackstar HT40 1x12 combo and it's served me well over the last year. I would say keep the Marshall as a practice amp and invest in either a larger SS amp OR buy a 20 to 50 Watt TUBE amp. Both SS and tubes have their pros and cons but go shop around and try some of both.

a 12 will not give you +3db unless the speaker has a higher spl (sound pressure level) rating than the one you have. You could get a 10 inch speaker with an extra 3db over your current speaker for the same result. Its all about the spl rating.
Having said that, you need the right tools for the job. An MG30 is a practice amp. You are in a band now so save up and get something that is built for that purpose.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

If money is tight, you could probably get a used Transtube Peavey Bandit in the $100 range. That'll give you a 12" speaker and 75-80 watts, and it'll sound better than the Marshall.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

Or tell the drummer to play quietly.

Or get another hunk o' junk mini-amp and enjoy double the crappiness. In stereo, even.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

I would suggest start sniffing around the pawnshops in your area for a more powerful amp. I got my Marshall VS100 for $200.

Re: Need More Power..!!!

I am not familiar with your amp.
Does it have a Speaker extension jack.?
If so (as others have said).....More speaker(s), and not Bigger speaker(s) will give you some more VOLUME.
If you want More POWER, you need to get a different and more powerful amp.
best

Re: Need More Power..!!!

Its a OK amp for a practice amp,but thats that! I'll save up some money and shop around...I'll keep the Marshall at the house!

Re: Need More Power..!!!

Have you really had the channel volume and master up to ten? I'd put all eq, gain, channel volume, and master on ten just to be sure it's not loud enough (turn off effects and verb for the test)

A +3db change is considered "barely perceptible", meaning you won't hear any difference (assuming there is one with a new speaker).

Unfortunately, it's amp upgrade time for you and I'm not referring to modding your current one.

Between your amp and the $$ you would spend on that speaker upgrade, you can get something that will meet your needs out of the box.
