For a really short bit of wire, almost anything within reason will work. Hack up an old pair of headphones or a busted up appliance and use that wire. I've done it before with no issues.

Just about any wire will work.
Computer power cords are usually 18 gauge inside.
Also, many hardware stores sell a wide variety of wire by the yard or meter. Cheap. And, with the vintage-flavouring exception of cloth wire on expensive single coils, realize that there's no such thing as "guitar wire", and the likes of stewmac just repackage a generic multipurpose product at +1000% markup
