Need Pup and Tone Circuit Clarification for a EB Music Man Stingray Bass

Hello everyone,

I am doing a complete rewiring and replacing of all the electronics for a Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray dual pickup clone bass. I am planning on installing a pair of SMB-4D for the bridge and neck positions. The bass has 4 control knobs on the body. There is also a three way blade switch probably used for series, parallel and split tones.

Can someone tell me what type of tone circuit should I use? (STC-3M4, STC-3A, STC-3P, etc?)

Are SMB-4D active or passive pups?

How can I connect two pups to this type of set up? Are they connnected via the volume pot, tone pot or through the tone circuit board? Does anyone know of a wiring diagram for dual pups? I couldn't find on SD's website,

Thanks.

welcome to the forum!

they are passive pups. is this bass currently setup for two pups? does it use a balance knob to select which pup is active?

Yes, there are two pups in this bass. I don't believe that it has a balance knob as it looks like they were hardwired since no tone circuit board was installed. This is a chinese copy of a MM bass.

On single pickup EBMM bass guitars, the three-way switch is for series/single/parallel coil combinations. In the single coil mode, a third underslung coil provides noise-cancellation. The SD equivalent is the SMB-4a.

All EBMM bass guitar pickups are passive. It is the Tone control network that is active. Normally, a Stingray would be paired with the STC-3M3 or 4 EQ. With two pickups, either a Blend pot or a second volume pot will be required.

If you already have the SMB-4d pickups, you might as well employ the three-way lever switch to select the pickups.

Ok...I am understanding this more now.

So does anyone have a wiring diagram on how these two pickups are to be soldered onto the switch first, then with the tone control unit?

So an STC-3M4 would be good for 2 pups then?

thanks.

The schematic diagram for your project bass guitar is shaping up to be a hybrid of several standard diagrams.

It could involve any or all of the following;
1) The PU selector for a Telecaster
2) The Volume controls from a Jazz Bass
3) Master Volume and Blend pots *
4) The STC-3M4 active EQ

* If you choose to have a Blend pot, the three-way lever switch will be redundant as a PU selector.

On a dual HB bass guitar, the Schaller Model P five-way selector switch might prove interesting.
