need quick feedback regarding JB pruchase

There is a JB available in a local guitar shop that I want to buy.

The music store clerk read the white sticker on the back of the PuP and told me that it says "JBJ." THe sticker clarifies that it was built before 2002 (as shown on the SD website chart.

Here is my question:

Does an old JB sound as good as a brand new one. I am assuming that it may even sound better/warmer than a new JB made in the past 2 years. I'd prefer a new one because I want to make sure that I am getting the same quality PuP as one JB that may have been built early 90's/late 80's. Maybe PuPs are like wine and sound better with age???

Can you guys give me some quick feedback because I am supposed to pick up the PuP saturday morning.

itll sound the same as a new one. in a very old pup the magnets may weaken a touch giving a sweeter tone but it takes 20 years + for that to be noticable

Dosent the "J" mean it was wound by MJ? If so, get it!! Hell, get it anyway.

Holy smokes... are you guys telling me that I fell on a gem of a JB!

I bought the PuP and the sticker says "JBJ" on the back. I know that the PuP is made before year 2002 but don't know much else... I'd love to hear what the white sticker insignia means...

You guys got me all excited and I am gonna go solder it!

Most of the used JBs I've found are JBJs. It seems like every one that was made in the 80s was made by MJ. She must have been pretty busy. They sound like any other. SD has pretty good standarization throughout the years. I like to think they are better, but they probably aren't. I've got two myself.

Good God... your right.. i played the JBJ tonight after installing it at work (screw what I'm there for and being paid to do). I installed this PuP and it seriously has S-O-U-L.

I've started a "customer appreciation for MJ" thread in the general forum.. sign your name guys!!! lets let her know how we appreciate her work!

Re: need quick feedback regarding JB pruchase

I installed an 80s JBJ from an old Kramer in my telecaster and it is considerably warmer than a the newer JB it replaced. The difference is more than noticeable-like night/day.

However, i spoke to a Duncan tech when I was installing it (didnt have a diagram, had a question about the wires), and when I had him on the phone, I inquired about the "JBJ"-he told me it was just a production code, and it could have been possible that MJ wound it, but he could not tell for sure.

Regardless, it is a killer pickup that doesn't have any of the spikiness that some JB users complain about. Check out the lead here, that is all JBJ:
