Need recs for bridge pickup

Ive read the site and the forums but I would benefit from some personal opinions. For years I have used a custom custom in the bridge of my Schecter C1+. Mahogany body and maple neck, maple top, rosewood fretboard. I have a 59 in the neck and Im happy with it. Lately though, I have tired of the loose flubby bass of the CC. The mids and highs sound great, I just want a tighter bass. More chugga chugga less blubba blubba. Custom 5? I play through a kustom defender 30 watt tube amp or sometimes into a digitech rp1000 into a peavey PA. My styles vary a great deal but I do play a lot of psych and stoner rock.9

Welcome to the forum!

The Custom 5 would do what you want. In any case, it is easy to switch- just get an alnico 5 magnet and switch out the magnet in the Custom Custom- instant Custom 5!

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

How easy of an operation is that for a guitar tech newbie? I have plenty of playing experience but little in the way hands on work and modding.

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

If you like the mids of the custom custom, you may have an issue with the C5. It's really scooped

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

I dont mind trading some of the mid prescence for better bass response, but if its *very* scooped then yeah I dont know. Do you have an alternative reccomendation?

Maybe a ceramic Custom? The bass is tight, highs about the same and more mids than a C5.

i had same issue with the custom custom. definitely go custom ceramic. Magnet changes are really easy. u just cut it open lol. it doesnt look pretty but it works so i dont care

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

Stick an UOA5 (unoriented a-5) magnet in your CustomCustom. It will do what you want, and mesh better with the 59n.

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

Well, I'd say then just to buy a selection of magnets (they are cheap). One of them will do exactly what you want.

+1 get some magnets. I've done this with exact same schecter guitar, custom bridge, 59 neck. I liked custom 8 best, UOA5 was a close second.

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

The alnico 8 will help for sure, but to be honest my favorite is the ceramic Custom. The Custom 5 if significantly more scooped, but the Custom isn't nearly as scooped. I couldn't pull the Custom 5 fast enough; it just sucked too much mid-range that I wanted.

No, no, no! Heavens NO! The highs in the Custom (ceramic mag) are nothing like the highs from a C5. You don't even need to be deaf (like me) to hear the difference...you can FEEL the brittle piercing highs of a Custom.

While the UOA5 is a great mag and goes really well in a Custom, it is probably not the best choice for the OP. It's not going to sound enough different for what he wants/expects.

Re: Need recs for bridge pickup

I've got the Schecter C1. Great guitar! I went through many pups and mag swaps in mine. The Custom 5 and Custom 8 were terrific. I ended up with a P-Rail regular/neck model mounted in a Triple Shot ring. Amazing tones from this setup. And, frosting on the cake, this is also the very most versatile guitar I own (and that's now over 50).

I'd recommend trying some different mags in your CC starting with the A5. The A8 is great in the Custom and is perhaps my favorite of any possible Custom iteration, but may sound a little heavy/dark in your guitar. There's a lot of mahogany in that guitar and it has a natural full-bodied and dark flavor to it. It is a perfect foundation for a P-90 (like in the P-Rail).

You claim to be deaf, but still able to hear the "piercing highs" of a ceramic Custom. Typically with hearing loss one loses their high range first, so forgive me if I agree to disagree regarding the relative tonality of the Custom and C5.
