Need some advice on making a pedal review on youtube

Re: Need some advice on making a pedal review on youtube

Playing wise, nothing elaborate, let the pedal speak for itself.

+1 one I can't count the times I have watched gear demos and people have so much going on with other effects and setting you can not get the feel for the pedal/pickup. Play the pedal through a clean natural sounding amp. Then if it warrants it add some gain.

Re: Need some advice on making a pedal review on youtube

If I were to make a demo of a pedal or amp I would consider this:

- Use a Strat with "traditional" true single coils, a LP with PAFs and a Super Strat with some more punchier pickups for hard rock or metal like a Distortion Set or even . This way the pedal can be heard in different styles of music, if that is what you want to demonstrate. If the pedal is versatile then let it shine..
- Switch between pickups, don't stay just in the bridge pickup.
- Besides struming chords don't forget about some lead/solo, both bridge and neck. Lot of people lik to do solo with neck pickup.
- Try to keep it short enough so listener can just sit and listen to different tones just and not need to scroll back to too much.
- Be sure there is something to compare to, like pedal off vs pedal on.
- Maybe you can use a looper after the guitar and before the pedal. That way you can hear the same notes on different settings of the pedal and have a better reference on how each know changed the tone.

#9 Make the thing sound good!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Sound quality. I could give a rat's @$$ about fancy chops. Simpler is better.

+1 This should have been #1.

I can still remember, while looking for Peavey Windsor vids, the number of people who dimed the thing, and recorded it into their cellphone mic. Sounded like an old 1960's transistor radio playing AM.

I agree with a lot of the comments above....

Andy @ PGS is the peak of demos. Standard, flat amp, common guitars (Strat, Tele, LP), several examples of how to use the pedal and real riffs the use a similar tone. Great sound quality and an appropriate amount of commentary.

Re: Need some advice on making a pedal review on youtube

Thanks for all the input, I haven't made a video yet. I don't have the equipment to do a proper review, so I passed along all the tips you guys made to my buddy. On a side note, My friend contacted George Lynch and sent him a Raven Overdrive pedal to try out. GL contacted him and said it is now on his main board. How cool! Now he is waiting for his approval to add him to the Artist list on the Rockstock website.

That's really awesome!

Apparently Brian a Wampler threw a pedal on stage after a Brad Paisley concert, that's how the artist/builder relationship started for the Paisley Drive.

You'll always have trolls, and the misperception of helpful critique as trolling. No matter how well something is done, someone exists to troll it.
