Need something to beef up my Peavey Tracer

My Peavey Tracer is probably my favorite guitar. It is loaded with a Kahler Spyder double-locking trem, is made of poplar (I think, it's pretty bright), has two single-coils, and one humbucker.

I was considering putting something in the bridge (humbucker) to get a little more oomph in the lows and low-mids department, but at the same time, it MUST be good for solo work. The styles/tones I am aiming for are along the lines of Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, and Bumblefoot. I need a singing lead tone that doesn't mask dynamics, a good/solid split tone, and something that will really complement a bright wood, double-locking trem guitar.

So basically, I'm after a more modern "guitar virtuoso" tone that allows a lot of playing dynamics and touch sensitivity to shine. Any suggestions?

hey young gun

hope all is going well with you

how about a blues saraceno trembucker?

Oomph in low and low mids, to me, would be a Ceramic magnet (mostly for the low mids).

I'd suggest a Custom for a Poplar body. It sounds thick, and great for leads too. It's decent split as well.

But again, I'd suggest a Custom for anything :D

Yeah, I was considering that one. Hmmmm, looks like it might be the ticket! Check your PMs!

What're the tonal characteristics of a Custom? Like, what would be the sound it is most associated with?

Re: Need something to beef up my Peavey Tracer

Custom: Thick, midrangy (good for poplar), tight bass. It's a powerful pickup, thick, but not like...overpowering.

Hmmmm, that sounds pretty appetizing! It just might fit the bill. So we have Custom and Blues Saraceno on the list. What about the Custom 5 and the Custom Custom?

C5 IMHO, is a bit too lean in the mids unless its in a LP and you're really cranking a Marshall.

I'd go with the CC. It has a ton of mids which really make it sing, and it has round highs, which helps tame a bright axe. The lows aren't super tight, but if your guitar is bright and snappy, it should work well.
