Need speaker, 50w or more

No I'm not getting rid of my 412. You can pry my 412 from my cold, dead fingers :p :fing2:

I need a killer speaker that can handle 50w. I want mids like a 25w greenback, but with a bigger sound than a greenback, if that's possible. Classic Marshall tone is the focus. I don't really care for the v30 or G12T-75 though.

Not trying to save a few bucks on something generic. I might just get Weber to make me something - not sure yet.

I dunno, what do you guys and gals think? Is there anything that I just have to hear before making a custom order?

Edit ********************
I just got a Classic Lead 80 from Buckeyedog (many thanks for a nice transaction :) )
I don't have a cab for it yet, but I replaced one of the greenbacks in my Marshall 412 and disconnected the other speakers, to hear it by itself. It is not as midrangy as the others (greenbacks) but it is more of a full range speaker and the mids are nice just the same. I'm impressed, because I don't really care for v30s or g12h in my current marshall rig. It definitely likes to have some volume. I think it will sound really good in a ported 1x12 cabinet.

But, you guys have aroused my curiosity regarding the G12-65 also :D

Your advice is appreciated, fellow forum dudes :D

Is this going into a cabinet? Or is it just by itself? If it's going in with a couple or three other speakers, you might as well go for the greenbacks. They'll give you the tone you want and you'll have 1 or more speakers to help with the load. If it's by itself, I'd suggest an Emminence. There are a bunch of choices, they sound good and they're moderately priced.

Email eminence with a good description of what you want and what you liked/disliked about the speakers you have tried before. They are very helpful and quick to respond.

G12-65 sounds like what you want here.

++++1.
Like you I have never been fond of the vintage 30. I needed a new cabinet for my MK 5 I have on order so I bought a 2x12 Avatar. I got it with one Heritage G12-65 and was going to add my Celestion Gold to it. When the cabitnet arrived I played it with just the G12-65 and LOVED it. Full bass end, gorgous punchy mids with a sweet top end. Very balanced from one end to the other. THis speaker was initially designed as a higher wattage greenback. I have put the gold in with it for the moment but am leaning towards putting two G12-65 in the cabinet. I was that impressed.

+1 on the classic lead 80. I've got one in a closed back 112 cab, and it's a great speaker. Got mine for $50 here locally.

Thanks guys! Investigation persists, with help from my friends at the forum.

Re: Need speaker, 50w or more

Why not order a Weber Silver Bell like I did? You can choose what type of magnet you want in addition to the power rating and it's designed to imitate the Celestions Marshall was putting in their cabs in the 1960's.

Re: Need speaker, 50w or more

I just got my 2nd G12-65 last week and replaced the Celestion Gold in my 2x12 cab. It now has 2 G12-65. Amazing!!. The best mids, and best overall balance of all my speakers. You can get them for $160 a piece from avatar (cheaper than musicians friend).

My pleasure Stevo! And yes, the CL80 does indeed like volume!!

I just put a WGS ET65 in my Engater 112 and I really like it so far. Needs some more break in time, but first impressions are good. I just couldn't justify spending almost three times as much for the Celestion counterpart. Search around on the Gear Page and Rig Talk as there is some chat about these.

Re: Need speaker, 50w or more

I did have a weber silver bell for a while. Nice speaker but not for me. It reminded me of the celestion g12t75. I do like the weber blue dogs though. For the marshall, the quad greebacks are still my favorite setup, but in this case I needed something for a very cool 1x12 cabinet :)

Re: Need speaker, 50w or more

Stevo, just had a thought. Ted's 1225 is his greenie type speaker. I have a quad and they are great. I asked him if I could get that tone in a higher wattage. He indicated that you could order a Blue Dog at 65 watt for example and tell them in the note section that you want it voiced like the 1225. He said that could be done. I also have the Pre Rola doping that he does. I think I still have the old e-mail......I can check and send you the exact e-mail when I get home today.

Re: Need speaker, 50w or more

Here's my e-mail exchange with Ted:

What would be the best or closest way to get the tone of the 1225's with pre rola doping at like say 50 watts each? Or at least 30 watts??

I would use the 75 watt blue dog and have it built like a 1225. We can do that. The coil is the same weight and mass as the 1225, so the tone should be there.

Thanks very much,

Ted
