Need suggestions for metal amp

I know the Peavey 5150. NO.

I am looking into getting a nice metal amp my list so far is.
ENGL Savage 120
Orange Rockerverb 100 MKII
Mesa Triple Rectifier
Mesa Dual Rectifier
Mesa Mark V
Framus Cobra
Diezel Hagen
Soldano SLO100


Whatever I get will be paired with a 7 string guitar. (I am still deciding on the guitar also)

Playing metal, more like Keith Merrow stuff rhythm wise, not much lead.

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT CLEANS I have a marshall for that so cleans don't have to be good.

I will be using a Maxon OD808 to assist.

Not trying to annoy you, but what about the Peavey 6505+??
It's a bit more tasty and less brutal/fizzy sounding than a 5150. Sweeter mids.
It's an absolutely monstrous high-gain amp for low tunings.

any rendition of Peavey is out. I have played a 6505+ and a 6505 and a EVH 5150III liked none of them

If I were spending the kind of money some of those amps go for, I would buy a Rhodes Colossus, or a Rhodes Gemini, or Rhodes Orthos if I didn't want to spend that much money.

ETA: Oh yeah, I forgot, Rhodes is now called KSR.

I am not into ordering stuff like that, I am more of a off the shelf kind of guy

Ok.

I have a Mesa Triple Rec and tight isn't exactly in the cards unless you either run a boost such as a Tube Screamer in front of it or swap out the power tubes for EL34s. I ended up going the power tube route. and even still, it isn't the tightest amp. I also spend more time tweaking the controls on it than I do playing it. I have managed to get some tones with decent mids, but it's forte is scooped mids.

So I would avoid a Recto if you want plenty of mids.

It's too bad that there aren't any Splawn dealers up your way. My Pro Mod does tight middy metal stuff very well, and I think a Nitro with KT88s would be right up your alley.

There are no "metal" amps, there are metal players. I used a Fender Silverface in my metal days and had a very heavy, dark, high gain tone. None of those amps will get you there, you have to get you there. If you already have a Marshall you should be able to take it to the deepest depths of metal tone.

You are seriously doing something wrong if you can't get those tones out of a Peavey. Wrong cabinet?

ever thought of I don't like the sound of a Peavey 5150? I just don't like it. I love rectifiers and they get me the sound I want I am looking for opinions on the amps listed above nothing else. I always got told that it sounded awesome and all that but I just didn't like it myself.

That being said, my marshall is good for it but I like it for cleans and I have it set up for cleans. I am looking for something to cover the heavy territory well and efficiently, mainly why I said I do not care about how good it sounds clean.

Mark V, definitely. Didn't care much for the Recto, but the Mark type stuff does everything and does it well.

All of those amps are expensive and you flip through a lot of gear. If you can afford to chase tone, that's great.

For metal amps, try some solid state amps to see if maybe they give you the tone you want.

You could get *all* of these for half the price of any of those other amps:

H&K Warp
Ibanez TBX150
Marshall Valvestate
Crate GX130
Peavey XXL
Randall RG100


I own all of those and can get good tight metal tones out of any of them.

The ENGL Savage is bar none, THE best metal amp I have ever tried. Better than a 5150/6505, better than any Rectifier, better than any Marshall, better than a Soldano.

It's a raging beast with razor sharp teeth and a thunderous, menacing growl. Surgically tight, with a low end like a warhammer on a 10-ton anvil. You will not need a boost. It also has beautiful cleans. But the distortion is just otherworldy. Seriously seriously impressive amp, and really easy to get good sounds out of. It's even better than any of Engl's other amps that I've tried lol.

Expensive as hell, but worth it, IMO.

I have a Marshall VS100 and I can go as deep and dark as I would like with it. The thing growls. I am pretty sure Ace uses the same amp for his 80's metal gig. I paid $200 for my VS100 60/100 watts, 1x12, great onboard distortion and reverb. I also have a solid state Randell that gets the job done. That being said if I was doing a metal gig I would prefer to use my Silverface if it wasn't so damn big and heavy.

Wait.. dont you have a single recto? If you have that and your OD808 how are you not able to get a metal tone?

Sorry sounds more like a player issue than a gear one...
