Need suggestions for metal amp

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

About a year ago I saw a Peavey XXX going for around $400. I'd also look into that ZT lunchbox for $299. 200 watts solid state with some good pedals in front through a 4x12 would be quite impressive.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

If you get a chance check out the Genz Benz El Diablo 100. It has a wide EQ, so you can get whatever kind of scooped or mid heavy sound you want. It also has a great presence control so you can make it darker or brighter. It is also a four channel amp so it can get any sound from Chet Atkins to Slayer. It can also take EL-34 or 6L6 tubes.

I don't tend to care for their speakers as I find them way overly mid heavy. I prefer my Marshall 1960 cab with it. That has been my main set up for years.

New they go for around $1200, but I have seen them go as cheap as $500 used. Mainly since not many people know about them. They won a bunch of awards from Guitar Player magazine a few years ago. Honestly, you will have a better chance at finding a used one than a new old stock one. Good luck hunting in whatever you decide to do.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

In reality MK IV's and some stripes of MKIII's actually have more gain than the MKV does. The MK V has an internally set lead drive. So you can never crank it past 7.5. Even then many metal players will run a boost with a mark series. That being said they are great amps.

But since the OP is chasing excess I'm going to suggest one of these

I don't know if it was the player, the guitar, the tuning or the amps but that sounded like inner arse.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

rockerverbs are pretty rad.
Dual rectos are awesome too.
Can't go wrong with either.

Those would be my tow choices as well.

I've owned the new Dual Rec Multiwatt as well as a Dual Rec Tremoverb. I miss the tremoverb.

Check out some of Premier Guitar's High Gain Shootout vids or Ola Englund's amp comparo vids. Those helped me quite a bit.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

My peavey jsx is damn awesome for metal. You don't really need pedals with it but if you put a tube screamer in front it will kick like a mule.

I love how the guy specifically states he's not interested in Peavey and it seems like every 3rd post is a Peavey recommendation.

I suppose that they just endear some customer loyalty. I can remember not being interested in Peavey, as much as some other brands. I can also remember having that opinion changed after hearing some of them up close and personal.

He said no 5150/6505s. A XXX is not a 5150. He may have said, "any rendition of Peavey is out", but I think he meant, "any rendition (version) of the 5150 is out".

Either way it looks like his mind is made up.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

I still think the problem is the cab/cabs he's using.

The 5150's and their like have just never done anything for me. I got a good solo on record with one once but I think it was a one-shot deal.

I do love the classic-series amps though. I'll never turn my nose up at a Classic 30 or 50.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

I have a Blackstar Series One 200 that I love. I can get whatever I want out of it, including killer cleans. I used to have a Fryette Sig: X. That's another one that can do any flavor of high gain you happen to need. The Pittbull Ultra Lead was a little out of my price range, but that would probably be the best out of the 3.

As you can see, I have a thing for KT88s. ;)
