Need suggestions for metal amp

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

*shrug* I toyed around with a dual recto for a while which was hanging around my old band's jam space (another band we were friends with was recording there, had some of their equipment in our room), and regardless of how I used it, I could not get along with it. I'd never want to own one.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

I sold the single recto since I didn't have room. But I moved and now I have room.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

If you can afford the Engl, go with that. I've been very impressed with the sound a lot of guys get with them.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

I keep looking around for Ashton Kutcher in this thread. We're being punk'd, aren't we?

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

There are no "metal" amps, there are metal players. I used a Fender Silverface in my metal days and had a very heavy, dark, high gain tone. None of those amps will get you there, you have to get you there. If you already have a Marshall you should be able to take it to the deepest depths of metal tone.

I concur. There aren't very many metal guitarists who are married to one amplifier for all their tones (even Dime never really finished his quest for tone). I think the idea of a 'metal amp' slightly obfuscates how sound actually works and when it comes to great, big, heavy songs with a mean player strapped right in who hits that guitar like there's no tomorrow, there aren't many amps that can't be made to do it right.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

Due to the amazing responses.... I am going to be deciding between ENGL Savage 120 and Diezel Hagen.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

Rivera knucklehead tre ... Best metal amp I have owned with the vht 100cl a close second.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

I'm not a metal guy, but I do own Mesa Mark III, IV and V amps. I would definitely try the Mark V. There are three modes (levels of gain) on each and it can get really extreme. Lots of YouTube videos to check out. I did a LOT of research before I bought my amp. I got the 112 C90 combo with a V30 Widebody Closed Back Cab, specially ordered with the V30. I could not be more pleased...the amp is everything it promised...and more. I like the tones from this rig perhaps even more than the head with the 412 Recto cab.

And unlike some of the other amps you've listed, this is no one-trick pony. I can't imagine that there is ANY venue, or ANY genre of music that I could not play with this amp...and have great tone. The Mark V could serve long after your tats are too wrinkled and faded to read. :)

I agree with this post, except I didn't care for the combo, the amazing versatility of the MkV was the #1 reason I bought it. I run the head through a Vertical angled 2x12 with V30/Cream back clones from WGS.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

Second on the Mark series. If you want tight, that's it. And they are incredibly affordable. If you don't want or need all the features of the V, you can get a Mark IV for a great price these days. Fantastic tones.

If you want tight, you want a Mark.

In reality MK IV's and some stripes of MKIII's actually have more gain than the MKV does. The MK V has an internally set lead drive. So you can never crank it past 7.5. Even then many metal players will run a boost with a mark series. That being said they are great amps.

But since the OP is chasing excess I'm going to suggest one of these

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

lots of great suggestions, but I can't believe the fryette stuff hasn't been discussed.

the deliverance, sig: x, or pittbull amps are incredible for metal. the latter two are crazy versatile, and the deliverance can be depending on your playing style.

I am a mesa fan, but I love the fryette stuff.

Fryette Sig: X is defintely a pretty kickin' metal amp. Bit more affordable too.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

And there is a third alternative in the Mesa line, other than the Mark V...and the Single, Dual, Triple Rectos (which should also include the Roadster and the unbelievable Road King).

And that is the Royal Atlantic. I had a line on a used combo, but I missed it...and then wound up buying the Mark V when GC closed out their Mesas. The RA is a tremendous two channel amp, and the built-in attenuators can tame the output in smaller venues. It has a definite Brit voicing, but you could play an archtop through the Clean channel at a jazz gig. And one of the guys in Lamb Of God uses one...is that metal enough? ;)

The older Stiletto is pretty awesome, too...the RA's predessor. I do like the Clean channel of the RA a little better, but the Tite Gain mode in the Lead channel is amazing. I need another amp like I need a hole in my head, but if I found another good deal on a Stiletto or RA, I'd be all over it.

I can also give some props to the Fryette/VHT and the Rivera amps. I wouldn't feel deprived or put upon to have to play one, lol.

Re: Need suggestions for metal amp

You sold the mesa? I know you probably made some good coin on that deal but still....you had it right there.

Honestly, for what your looking at, I don't think those amps are worth their price. Don't get me wrong, I've played alot of ENGL's, VHT, a few Diezels (played a D-moll alot as a friend has one) etc and they sound GREAT! But I do firmly believe they don't sound three times as good as the tried and true's like their price tag suggests. Also, unless your playing with people, most of these options are just too big, especially in the super high gain world, low volume = fizzy.

My two cents

I've got a Siggy. It's a ridiculously versatile amp. Yeah, it'll do metal better than a lot of the great amps out there. It'll also do classic rock, fender/hiwatt cleans, just about anything. I've been through a lot of amps in the past 6 years, and this is a very good one.
