I agree about fretboard radius. The 7.25 is probably why I've not meshed with Teles of the past. The 9 something seems a better fit if it's to become a long term keeper.m Thanks for all the tips.
That's what I was thinking. If you can save up just a bit more, check out a Ron Kirn Tele. He will build it exactly to your specs from scratch. I have never played one, but they sure look amazing. If I had the cash, that's where I'd be headed.
1. Classic Vibe 50s Tele.
2. Classic Player Baja Tele.
3. Highway 1 Texas Telecaster (should be cheaper, but they seem to be pretty scarce these days).
4. Classic Series 50s Lacquer Telecaster (or save some bucks and buy the regular one)/Road Worn 50s Telecaster (the new ones are barely worn which is a total plus IMO).
5. AVRI 52 (Over budget).
Out of those, bang for buck-wise the Texas is my favorite, but also the hardest to find. They all have differences in specs but I've liked them all.
FWIW I would be thankful if somebody snipes this before I get temped. 52 AVRI. Fair price at $1150, I don't think you can do better unless it's a zero feedback ebay deal:
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the G&L, Asat Classic! They're great guitars. They can be had for reasonable prices in the used market. I bought this one for $550!

I once owned one of these. Mine was a solid body ASAT classic. I can vouch for the build quality. It was a three bolt neck, US made model. It was very well made and finished. The pickups were better than decent, but they had their own tone. Not vintage Fender by any means. But they had a tone of their own.
