New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

Re: New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

Gibson reminds me of tobacco companies, having a whole marketing and product structure that's based on the idea that a certain set of addict consumers will buy anything they create, so long as it's somehow new and somehow still the same. A 25.5 scale LP seems a bit like new Camel Menthol Smooth Silver Royals, marketed as an amazing new product, and not just another twist on a decades old product, with the twist being decades old itself.

Seriously, this would have been a great idea in 1986 when ibanez, Jackson, etc, were beating them up. And they still can't put a Floyd on one for under 3k.

Re: New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

It seems way more logical to put the modern touches/upgrades mostly on budget-Gibsons, along with the "normal" budget models. Because you can get plenty of killer 25.5" scale, 24 fret, Floyd equipped guitar for $500-$800 new, some of which even have Gibson shapes. It doesn't make sense to limit these modern upgrades to Custom Shop models. And I doubt Gibson purists would cry over Studio models recieving upgrades when their Standards and Customs are left alone as the way they've always been.

Re: New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

It's a decent idea in theory.. but at least in my mind, the 24.75 scale length is kind of what makes the Les Paul a Les Paul. It's not an instrument for pianistic lows or shimmering chords. It's more about a dark, almost kind of mushy thing (not in a bad way, it's a pretty musical sound).

Though.. I suppose putting them in a 'Gibson should be..' box is what's keeping them releasing the exact same guitars for the last 60 years.

Bottom line though, that price cray.

I really like the idea of it. The custom shop price just isn't the right way to introduce it. That said, I hope it leads to more affordable models with that scale length since the Fender scale just feels home.

I agree. the short scale playability and tone is why I play a LP. I have a Charvel for my 25.5 needs. I guess the appeal here is for die hard gibson guys or LP guys that want to keep the shape and feel but want the longer scale option. ( and have fat stacks of cash) Guys that buy into the only Gibson is good enough slogan.

Re: New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

People who tend to spend that much money on Gibsons are exactly the type also most likely to complain that they messed with the formula. Maybe they want it to fall flat, so they can point to it forever and say "Look we tried 25.5" scale guitars and no one bought then, but hey buy another reissue. We did one of Eric Clapton's lemonburst that was really Jeff Beck's one that he borrowed from George Harrison. He used it for one unused take on one ultimately scrapped song on Goodbye. We think it's a really great value at $8,000. We have gone to such painstaking detail we even got the boogers right, and just the right amount of booze was spilled on the back to replicate both the stain and smell."

Re: New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

I built a Warmoth "single cut" LP style with a 25.5" scale last year. Just didn't feel right. Loved the tone of the Whole Lotta pups though...

Re: New 25.5 scale Gibson LP

That's a cool idea. Obviously not the route to take for classic Les Paul tone. But it probably makes them sound much better, in terms of what I tend to like in a guitar, while still keeping the basic Gibson Les Paul look.
