new amp advice!

hello all,

I'm really excited because I have an excuse to buy a new amp for the gig I got for my band on the 22nd. I'm selling my crate v1512 because its not loud enough and I'm looking to get a amp head. (I already have a cab) but I'll have about 350 to spend and I'm wondering if yall have any suggestions for an amp? It will definately be a used one, and I would prefer tube. I know I can get a valveking head or an old peavey ultra head for about that much, but are there any other amps I should consider, please throw em out there.

I'm prolly limited though cuz my budget is TIGHT!

oh yeah and I need it before the 22nd, so i cant hunt to much.

Re: new amp advice!

For $350 I would try to find a used Peavey Windsor. It's kinda like a poormans JCM800. It wouldn't be my first choice for an amp, but if I were limited on funds and had to have something tube, that would be what I picked.

There was a thread a few days ago that summed up the Windsor pretty good. I haven't owned one, but I have played through one for a couple of hours at a store when they came out. My only complaint about it was that it got a little "buzzy" with the gain way up. That might be corrected by using pedals if you are wanting a heavy sound. I'm not sure how well the amp does with pedals though as I didn't try any through it. If you're going to be playing more classic style rock, it should be perfect though.

Re: new amp advice!

I've played both the windsor and the valveking. They both sound good, but the valveking is more aggressive. And it has two channels, which I need. the windsor has only one channel. I did like it though.

Re: new amp advice!

The Valveking does seem more agressive, but to me, it didn't have as "sweet" of tone as the Windsor. Another problem I have on 2 channel amps, is they never blend well from going from a clean channel to the gain'dist channels. I even have this problem with my Marshall and all the other amps I have owned. I have found that if I need to play clean that I can use a slightly dirty channel and use my guitars volume knob to clean up, then a OD for searing gain tones and lead and it just sounds a ton better than switching the channels of the amp.

*Slight Edit*
If the Valveking sounds good to you, then go for it and don't worry what someone else thinks. Only you know what you want to sound like!

u should get some pateince!! I suggest the peavey vtm 60 or peavey vtm120

Kim T used those on early soundgarden and they sound brutal! its like a more snarly jcm800. they are looked highly upon. you can get em on egay for around 400$ or less...Id buy if it was $300 with no probs

Re: new amp advice!

It seems you may be after those EL34 tones, if so, the Windsor would be a good choice in that price range. If you are a little more flexible with your tone choices, look for an old Peavey Ultra 60 or Ultra 120 (made anytime in the 90s - there were two different model lines, pointy logo and light-up logo - either is good). They are great amps that go somewhat cheap, but the high gain tones are right in between the Mesa and Marshall sounds. They went on to become the Triple X/JSX lines of amps.
