New amp advice

Hello I should be getting my first tube amp this week and I'm happy and nervous about it at the same time because I've never owned one before. Having said that what do I need to do to make sure I'm not damaging it any way. It's a Randall RGT100 combo btw.

Re: New amp advice

Make sure that the speaker is plugged into the amp.
That's it.

Re: New amp advice

Congrats on coming into the world of tubes!

Always make sure the speaker is plugged in if the amp is on (even in standby).

Flick the power on but leave it in standby for at least 30 seconds or so to let the tubes warm up, then take standby off and play! This isn't necessary but I like to put standby on again when I'm done playing, while I put my guitar down and unplug, then turn the amp off.

This won't damage it but experiment a little with the master volume and channel volume to find the sweet spot for your amp. Some higher powered tube heads have a slightly different feel if you run the master volume wide open and use the preamp/channel volumes to control overall loudness - and vice versa, try running the master volume low and the channel volume high.

With most amps you should get more saturation as you turn the volume up so make sure you turn down the gain a bit to compensate (unless you want that sound and feel)

What kind of music do you play? What is your first tube amp going to be?

Re: New amp advice

I put mine on stand-by for a few minutes after playing as well. And then after I turn it completely off I let it cool down a bit before moving it. Even after a gig there's plenty of stuff to pack up without manhandling the amp right away.

Re: New amp advice

Don't blast the speaker full volume right away. Play some clean stuff at low volume for a few minutes with a brand new speaker to loosen it up before you lay the volume to it.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm going to buy a stand for it so I shouldn't be moving it too much. I like to play metal mostly with some grunge and old rock thrown in .The amp is the tube version of the rg100es.

Sounds like it will be at home but if u gig back up tubes or backup amp are crucial. (I carry an old Mustang3 and it scares my tube amps into behaving;)

Re: New amp advice

Ya it's a bedroom amp for now but maybe one day I'll have it on stage. Lmao that's hilarious. What do y'all look for in a speaker?

Re: New amp advice

Depends on the tones the amp and the guitar make. Then go from there on speaker charicteristics for what you want to tweak. I like a celestion V30 myself for metal but the stock speaker will be fine until you get a good grip on what is going on tone wise.
