New Amp Day! Marshall Content

Re: New Amp Day! Marshall Content

Yup. 2 more greenbacks. Or pick up some creamback g12ms.

Congrats on the amp!

4 Greenbacks = 100 Watts.

The amp is rated at 100 Watts of clean headroom. Cranking the amp will yield more wattage, so this amp cranked would still eventually blow 4 Greenbacks.

...Meaning he needs a total of 8 Greenbacks. ;)

Good point. But I wouldn't see any situations where I was playing on 8/10 for long, not even 10. Plus celestion speakers are known to be a little tougher than normal

Very nice, qaiso, you'll never ever regret buying the 410H. I'm also a member of the JVM Forum, registered in 2010 when I bought mine. I used to be extremely active on that forum until I started school and had no time. Great community over there, almost as cool as this one [emoji41]
I haven't gotten quite as adventurous as Gone_Shootin has on mods, but I did the negative feedback and the Plexi cap mods. The negative feedback mod is by far my favorite mod to ANY amp I've had. I know the amp sounds awesome now, but once you do the mod, the very first time you crank that knob on the pot you just installed and unleash the JVM's normally pristine, clean-as-a-whistle power section, you will undoubtedly defecate a red, kiln-dried masonry ingot. You'll wonder how you didn't notice that your speaker cab was at the bottom of a nine foot deep hole with a down-filled comforter draped over the grille cloth.

Ok, that description is probably a bit over the top, but that pretty much what I felt like when I did that mod 3 or 4 years ago.

Enjoy, bro!!

Re: New Amp Day! Marshall Content

those are such great amps. I've had mine for about 6 or 7 years now

Re: New Amp Day! Marshall Content

Ok, cool. I go by the same screen name over there.

I added 5 pots (one is around back), and the mods I've done are:

Plexi cap. I wish I would've left the switch out of the mod, because I never shut it off. I also may go with a bigger cap in the future, or make the existing cap permanent with an extra cap being switchable.

Mid sweep mod on the Clean, OD1 and OD2 channels. This just turns the slope resistor into a variable resistor and it's well worth it. The pots for the OD channels are over by the JVM logo, and I had to use 16mm pots in order to squeeze them in between the front panel board and the power switches. The clean channel pot is on the top right, by the input.

This is probably my favorite mod, because it allows you to dial in a lot of different tones. You can go from Tweed to Blackface on the clean channel and go from classic rock tones to absolutely brutal modern tones on the OD channels with this mod.

Blackface clean channel.

1959 crunch channel.

Recto OD2 mod minus the faux presence circuit. I decided to leave the faux presence circuit out of this mod because the JVM is plenty bright as it is, and it seems to have worked out quite well.

JCM800 OD1. Not too fond of this one. It made the channel sound too tubby for my tastes. I plan on modding this channel to OD2 specs along with the Recto mod minus the faux presence circuit because OD2 has become my go-to distortion channel, and it would allow to have two different settings without having to mess with the knobs.

3rd gain stage bias control/plexi one wire. Love this mod. It let's me dial in gobs if extra gain if I want it. The knob is located on the bottom right, by the input.

Negative Feedback mod. Love this one too. It let's you adjust how much negative feedback you have in the phase inverter, thus adjusting how much headroom you have in the poweramp. I originally had it's pot over by the input, but it caused the amp to squeal so I moved it around back.

Later on I may add a mid sweep control to the crunch channel, and plan on adding a choke. I also plan on modding the poweramp to run KT88/6550 power tubes and will probably upgrade the transformers when i do it. The stock transformers will run KT88s & 6550s, because they're identical to the transformers used in the Kerry King JCM800, but I would still feel more comfortable with bigger transformers. Besides, it'll give me a perfectly good set of Dagnalls to use for an amp build.

Thanks dudes, I actually recognize both of your names from the jvmforum. Honestly, it seems a bit dead. I was looking at the top 50 newest posts and I was looking back until the beginning on February. Nonetheless, all the important discussions have been archived for mods, tube selections, ect. I learned how to bias from there, very nice details and ect. It's a great archive, but I don't see it becoming lively as it once was apparantly. I'll still be lurking around tho!

As far as the mods go. I've taken a look at Casey's Mods, and I'm not sure if there's any other mods besides those. Can you guys please describe the negative feedback mod in greater detail? That is, the affect on the overall tone. That seems to be the most popular mod by far, so I am a bit curious. I wish this thing would take KT88's, I think that chunk would sound amazing in this amp!

Re: New Amp Day! Marshall Content

Like I said above, the Negative Feedback mod allows you to adjust how much headroom the poweramp has. Less headroom means that the poweramp will distort at lower volumes, and more headroom means that the poweramp will stay clean until you hit higher volumes.

And here's the easiest way to look at the most popular mods, thanks to Jackie. From the Board index click The Workbench - Problems + Mods + Tech Info, then click Modding Bible, then click The JVM Forum Mod Catalogue. That lists all of the most popular mods with a brief rundown of how to perform the mod along with some excerpts from discussions about the mod and the pros & con's of each mod.

Yes! That would be a very effective mod for at home players. I've read thru that thread before. Is there any other mods not listed in there? I saw some talking about the Randy Rhodes mod, but never read anything about it.
Anyway I'm not at all comfortable performing any of these mods. I'll have to figure out which ones I want to do and have a tech do all at the same time.

Which mods would you strongly recommend?

Yeah, there are other mods. They're in various parts of the Workbench forum.

The Randy Rhodes mod, from what I understand, is just another name for the 3rd Gain Stage Bias/One Wire mod.

And I guess I would recommend you at least do the Negative Feedback & Plexi Cap mods. That said, I'm very glad I perfoemed the other mods, with the exception of the JCM800 OD1 mod.

Re: New Amp Day! Marshall Content

It definitely do have a lot o' knobs. More than my dual recto. Tweaker's dream, congrats!!
