New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Well, tomorrow is off (the guy has family stuff come up) so we're looking to rearrange for next weekend.

You should go up to Doncaster instead, go play with some amps :)

My girlfriend was going to come with me to Swindon so I wasn't driving 'all that way on my own' (bless :D) but when I suggested Electro Music instead she didn't look too impressed! :banghead:

I may just go up anyway, atleast I'll have tried something before I (hopefully) try the Bogner next weekend.

Sounds a great plan.

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Just wanted to toss my two cents. I played a tourmaster a couple of times and it really didnt impress me much. Now, I think the Renegade is awesome and can get a good brown tone. I also really like the tweaker, but thats a diff story..

But, definately recommend the Splawn over any, but if you are thinking Egnater, look at the renegade. Fastredponycar on youtube has great Renegade clips..

Was funny reading your orig posts on these thread.. Your amp quest sounds like mine.. My dream amp would be Fender clean that can rolled to vintage plexi. Lead chan that goes from JCM800 to 80's modded Jcm800 and then PV5150 thick on chan 3. That would be my dream.. Cant find one amp to come close.. Sadly, I dont have many places round here to try many really good amps.. GC has fender, line 6, small marshalls and egnaters.

Yep, going to Electro Music within the hour! :D

Hey Bryan!

Yep, we're definitely in the same position. Well, we were until you got sorted ;)

I'm off to hopefully try the 5150 II within the hour, and then that only leaves Splawn and the Bogner on my short list.

If the Bogner is still available next weekend, I'll prob get it and even if I don't like it for whatever reason (I don't know why I wouldn't but you never know!) then I should be able to sell it on and get the Splawn or 5150 III :D

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Well, I went to the shop today after my last post to try some amps out.

They unfortunately didn't have the EVH in stock, but they did have a Cornford Roadhouse 30 head in, which was 1 of my 1st ideas when I decided I wanted a new amp.

I tried it through 1 of the Randy Rhoads white 4x12 cabs (I tried the RR head too but couldn't get it loud enough to form an opinion :D). The Cornford was a decent sounding amp with plenty of cut, but not really any body or power to the tone.

I'm not saying it wasn't very good, just didn't blow me away so I've decided it's not for me and have knocked it off my list at this moment in time.

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

There's not even a question if you're comparing Splawn and Egnater. I had an Egnater Renegade and loved it. They are an outstanding value; however, I have played a few Splawns and would not hesitate to choose a Splawn over an Egnater.

I like Egnater a lot but Splawn is on a whole different level. I had a JCM 800 for the longest time and the only Marshall style amp I ever really thought blew it away was the Quickrod.

The Roadhouse Cornfords are not bad amps at all but I'm sorry to say the Roadhouse just doesn't compare with an MK50H if you want a big, full and powerfull sound. It's not the sound that Cornford are known for and I've known a few people come up to me after gigs and and commented on how good, how different my amp sounds to the Roadhouse they tried in the shops. Remember that the Roadhouse series are the cheaper amps, and you can get a used MK50 or Hellcat for not that much more than a Roadhouse. Whilst I'm on the subject, the Hellcat os also a great amp, very sweet sounding, vintage channel covers cleans up to AC/DC gain and then the modern channel takes over. There is alot of gain on tap and it's suppose to do metal. Personally I found that it lacked bottom end, it had a very nice sound but needed more low end. I assumed this was due to the relatively smallish output transformer and the EL84's? All I'm saying is don't dismiss Cornford amps until you've tried the MK50H (not the MKII although alot of people seem to like the extra versatility that the clean channel offers and also the "smoother" dirt sounds"). If I were you though I would just have to follow up with the XTC.... it's got to be a winner and one day I will own one too! :friday:

Don't worry, I'm not basing an opinion of all Cornfords just on the Roadhouse head I tried :)

It wasn't a bad amp, just not full enough sounding for what I tend to go for tone wise.

As far as I know I'm still on for trying/fetching the XTC and oversized 2x12 next weekend, but I agree, for the price it's at I'd be a total fool to disregard it due to having to travel the 300miles to go get it! :D :friday:

I'm glad it's not just me who didn't dig the roadhouse :)

Good luck with getting that Bogner

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

I see that a lot of posters want the fender cleans and marshall gain, you guys need to be playing VHT/Freyettes. These are the amps you guys want, trust me.

I'm not specifically after a Fender style clean tone, just something useable! If I ever get to recording again I have an amp I really like the clean tone on, so that's not really an issue.

I'm more interested in the OD/Distortion side being able to do what I want :fing2:

Actually LastMcGee isn't wrong. VHT/Fryette amps sound incredible. The OD tones are very thick and super tight, kind of like the Splawn, but the clean tones are lively and beautiful as well.

A Fryette would be worth the price if all it did was that killer OD, but the cleans are a pretty sweet bonus.

As good as they may sound, I'm having trouble finding and affording 1 in this country :dunno:

They're not exactly common are they.
Thomann seem to have good prices, but they're in germany, although shipping would be free.
It's one of those "i've tried one, now I can search the net for the cheapest.' things.

I couldn't agree with this more. A Fryette, to my ears, always has a distinguishable voice. You hear terms like "Fender cleans" and "Marshall drive" and "6505 crunch." Fryettes are one of those amps that you can usually hear on the recording and immediately identify. It has its own voice.

It also tells you Steve Fryette knows a thing or two about designing amplifiers. I think every guitarist owes it to him or herself to play one, just because it is quite a thing of beauty. If I were in a band playing big gigs, I would have a Sig:X.

Must say I'm intrigued, then again it's Brow who's amp shopping not me :)

The official UK dealers appears to be Stormshadow Toneworks but I can't figure out if they're actually a real shop, or just mail order only.

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

never had the chance to play a Fryette. I always heard good things about VHT pitbulls

So, due to this thread, I checked out some vids on utube for the Xsig. pretty nice

I've never used a VHT/Fryette as they're not awfully common over here as far as I know.

They're 1 of those rbands of amps that I've always heard great things about but never used myself.
