New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

Re: New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

yeah the dtar part is wrong and the magmic is confusing. it says the magnetic pup is always on and the mic has a volume. there is a volume for the whole pup and a blend control for the mic.

Out of Seymour Duncan's acoustic offerings I think the Woody is the best. My favorite overall acoustic pickup is a Bill Lawrence A300 but maybe that's because I got mine for 30 bucks on CL ;)

Re: New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

i love my magmic, sounds great and easy to use. the description is just misleading

Re: New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

better string to string clarity and more natural sounding. woodys are fine for what they are but they dont capture the high end detail or some nuances of the tone of the instrument. the magmic isnt perfect either (nothing beats a good mic or multi mic setup for capturing the actual tone of an acoustic but mics are damn near useless live if electric instruments are involved) but its as good a pup as ive found for live work

Have you tried a Bill Lawrence A300? I feel like the A300 just amplifies the guitar's tone. The Woody to me sounded more natural than the LR Braggs in my J45 and AJ, but did sound quite as natural as the A300. Haven't tried a MagMic–should try it sometime!

i havent tried the a300. in general id rather not have the cable attached to the pup but if it sounds that good then ill have to find one to try

That's my only beef with it. I was thinking about cutting the cable and wiring it to a strap holder jack (the cables are pretty simple to cut then plug)

The thing I love about the A300 is how natural sounding the tone is...like zero "coloring" But I haven't tried a magmic so I don't know how to compare those two. I do know I liked the tone of the Woodys but just prererred the pristine clean tone with zero feedback from the A300.

Re: New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

the tone of the woody is fine and very usable, it just doesnt sound much like the actual sound of the guitar. i dont own great sounding acoustics just to have them sound like a generic acoustic when i play live, i want to hear the subtle nuances and differences in tone

I felt like the Woody sounded the best in a Taylor 300 series. The Lawrence A300 sounds best in my Eastman E8D which is basically a solid wood budget version of the Martin HD28 (same wood used with similar size, design and bracing.)

I think you would like the A300 if you are wanting a pickup that just amplifies the natural acoustic sound. I picked mine up on Craigslist for like $30 bucks. Was going to buy a new one but they are on backorder right now.

My method for choosing an acoustic guitar transducer system involves products of a rival manufacturer. :foot:

Re: New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

i used a sunrise pup for years and it sounded great, theres lots of good companies out there

Re: New Blog: How to Choose an Acoustic Guitar Pickup

When are you getting that Guild back,Trey?

Good memory! Probably won't get it back until 1st Quarter of 2016 :( It needs a neck reset, new frets and the saddle removed and reinstalled. I'm also getting the finish redone on it...long project BUT it's the best sounding 12 string I've ever heard and Thane (worked at the a Guild Shop in TN) said the sound box did not have any issues so he thought it would be worth it to get it fixed up from a cost standpoint.

Looking forward to getting it back like new!
