New Bridge for P-Bass

Hey, duders. Need some advice and info.

I'm pimping out my bass (a Fender USA Standard P with an S1 switch), and the bridge is giving me ulcers. The thing was great at the time of purchase, but after living with it for a while and having it set up by the local wizz... well, the magic is more or less gone. Dont' get me wrong, it's still a brilliant piece, but it feels plasticy, sterline, muffled, etc. I play with pick, fingers, and slap/pop style, as well as some tapping when it suits the song. The action is sluggish, the strings feel loose, spaghetti style even when I pluck closer to the bridge (I play in standard tuning, mostly, 45-105s, and I don't plan to change). There's DEFINITE side-to-side movement on most of the saddles, and to add injury to insult, burrs keeps appearing after I sand them off, and I keep breaking strings. Especially the low E, which is SUCH a pain!! Happened DURING A SHOW, and the backup bass was not brought along! :smack: :thumbsdow

Anyway, one thing I'm going to do is replace the bridge, among other things. I like the MusicMan style bridges a lot, but I'm not neccessarily in love with them. I've heard about totally different designs that are made to fit right in the factory drilled holes, but I don't know the brand. Are there any brands/styles that anyone would reccomend? I'm looking for something to lower the action a little more, pull the strings a little more tightly (if that's possible), fix the side-to-side play, resist those damn burrs, and even add a little more brightness and snap for my slapping and tapping.

Thanks, ya'll!! :afro:

Re: New Bridge for P-Bass

I've had good luck with Gotoh stuff. It's real solidly built, and the adjustment parameters are more precise. The downside... it doesn't look traditional; but it did bolt right on without any mods.

Re: New Bridge for P-Bass

I had a Gotoh 201 on both of my old MIM basses. It made a world of difference. There are slots for the saddle screws to rest in so the saddles don't move. The whole bridge is much more solid and well built than the stock Fender bridge.

Another good idea is the Badass II bridge. It comes stock on the Geddy Lee sig, but is available elsewhere aftermarket. It's very large.

Re: New Bridge for P-Bass

Thanks for the info, Tom. I looked at the Badass II a little bit, and I'm liking that model a lot more than any others I've checked out so far. But my bass is string-thru body, and it doesn't look like the Badass allows for it. Is that gonna cause any major issues? Or would it be fine to just ignore the string-thru holes if I were to replace with the Badass?

Re: New Bridge for P-Bass

You can ignore the string-through with the Badass. It won't hurt anything. Honestly, I've never felt much of a difference with string-through vs top-load on well built basses. I don't see why you couldn't even drill some holes through the base of the bridge, though.

Cool, Tom. Thanks a bunch! I think I've got a real direction in which to go. Looks like now I've got some playing to do.

Take care
