Ok, I'm in the process of building a new guitar.

-25" scale
-Alder body + Neck-thru Maple/Ebony
-Kahler 7300 Hybrid

I play in a groove metal band and play a Marshall 8100 blended /(ABY)/ Randall Rg80Es.

So, help me out.

Bridge: JB8!

Neck: Jazz3/4? Full Shred....? (A prefer a *bit* on the brighter side)

Influences/tones: Pantera, Throwdown, White Zombie, Rob Zombie, BLS, Metallica, Testament, Death, Children of Bodom, etc.

what amp are ya playin' through? if you've got a dark amp, then a bright pickup would in a way good in your setup.

edit:*oops*

JB or a JB8 pretty good for your bridge. 59 also would be nice choice for your neck.

Re: New Bridge & Neck (Alder/Maple/Ebony Neck-thru)

Super 3 would add some much-needed mids to those woods

Re: New Bridge & Neck (Alder/Maple/Ebony Neck-thru)

'59 neck.
you could try SH-5 or SH-14 bridge. :), although maybe you need something heavier.

Re: New Bridge & Neck (Alder/Maple/Ebony Neck-thru)

Custom Custom or Custom 8

Custom Custom:
.....and a spongier bottom end

That does not sound like what I need.
I am, however, interested to see how a Custom 8 would sound...

Oh, and keep in mind this is not a bolt on, yet a 25" PRS/Carvin scale neck thru.....so although
it's not a short scale, it's closer to 24.75" than 25.5"....(not sure if that helps....just saying it will
naturally be a bit warmer than a bolt-on 25.5'er, as the pickups are closer to the neck...)

I had a similar configuration from Carvin and it is going to a really bright guitar thanks to the maple neck-through. Something meaty, with an Alnico magnet would be good. Either a JB with an Alnico 2 (or 3 or 4), or a Custom-Custom.

Thanks for the reply. What Carvin pups did you have in that? C22?

Goin with the JB8!!

How would a Jazz8 or '59-8 sound in the neck?

ps: The wood may change from alder to ash, or possibly afr. mahogany. But the Maple/Ebony neck-thru is staying the same. Don't know if that will make a difference in pup choices.

A8 is a strong magnet, out in ceramic range but comparitively dark, so it's trickier to get close enough in the neck without causing string pull issues. I'd look at A4 if you think A5 is too bassy or bright. A3 if you want less bass & more highs than A4. And A2 if you just want it rounder.

Then again, they used to use Super 70s in the neck...

+1 go for a JAZZ4

Re: New Bridge & Neck (Alder/Maple/Ebony Neck-thru)

Ok, scratch the A8 in the neck. Jazz says on the site it works really well with mahogany and rosewood boards. Think it would still be ok with alder/ash and maple/ebony?

And what about Full Shred neck?

edit: I really want something fluid, but upper midd-y, and treble-y. Glassy if you will.

bridge: invader, dirty fingers, duncan distortion.

neck: full shred

Re: New Bridge & Neck (Alder/Maple/Ebony Neck-thru)

Going with the JB8 bridge.

Neck is between Full Shred and Jazz, with whatever magnets suggested.

Re: New Bridge & Neck (Alder/Maple/Ebony Neck-thru)

I'd probably try the '59, given it's an ebony fretboard/maple neck-through. Full Shred neck might be too shrill and the Jazz just too bright.

The Jazz & Full Shred neck both are more articulate than fluid. I don't think you'd have much trouble with boominess, which is the most common '59n complaint, given the guitar construction.

The Full Shred is similar to an all screw polepiece Jazz. Maybe not as hot, comparing the resistances?

You could also do a Full Shred bridge in the neck, if you don't play clean much. That's basically a Custom 5 in the neck, with the bloat controlled by replacing the studs with 0.5" hex heads.

Or a Screamin' Demon, that's similar to a hot PAF but glassy yet not harsh in neck, where some people hate it in bridge for being too bright. Another all-screw design, but mixes 0.75" slot heads with 0.5" hex heads.

I haven't messed around much with maple neck-throughs, so I'd have A4 on hand in case of excess brightness/bass.

Then there's the P-Rails neck...
