New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

Hello Folks,

Okay I have a Mahogany Strat body and neck with a Rosewood fingerboard. The body is routed for 3 HB's. I have two questions for you...

1. My thought was to put in the SH-11 Custom Custom, SH-4 JB Model, SH-6 Duncan Distortion. But what order would you put them in?

2. What would your three picks be in the High Output Humbuckers ?

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

Well I dunno, that is why I posted and asked for suggestions. I did mention that I was a newbie :)

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

If it were me I would only put a high output in the bridge position. I would want something classic in the neck position. Perhaps the 59 or the Jazz (to get some chime). For the middle position I am not sure what I would suggest until you decided on a neck and bridge pickup.

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

Geeze, given those strictures, the JB in the neck, the Custom Custom in the middle and the Distortion in the bridge.

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

Given the high output stricture,

EITHER 3x Allan Holdsworth signature HB

OR 3x StagMag HB and a whole lotta mode switches.

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

How does someone determine what type of pickup to put in what position? I understand some are labeled as "neck" or "bridge", but when you mix different model pickups and you run into my situation of having three pickups, how do you figure it out?

Well, what kind of tone are you going for? Do you have any experience playing with different low or high output pickups? Do you have a sound/tone you are trying to achieve? Its hard to determine what goes where until we know the direction you are wanting to go with this build.

If you are just wanting to experiment then put whatever you want in it and enjoy changing pickups and hearing the differences.

For Mahogany, I love hot higher-out pickups. I love the Seymour Duncan Dimebucker and Screamin Demon combo as it is super articulate and great for anything from Country to Jazz to Rock to Metal. So I personally recommend this combo for the Mahogany with Rosewood board (Dimbucker in the Bridge and two Screamin Demon's in the Neck & Mid.) Also, Bill Lawrence L500s (XL in the Bridge, and Ls or Rs in the Neck and Mid) would be cool too.

Also, I see you live in Buford, GA...that is not far from me (I am in Gwinnett County) we could meet up at a Guitar Center and I could show you my two guitars, one has a Gibson Hot Ceramic Set and the other has the Dimebucker if you are unfamiliar with higher output pickups.

Best of luck on the build!

If y'all do get together, give me a holler - I'm in Marietta, and have a few things I can bring, but most of mine are not high output.

Well I am just learning to play and I have actually taken off more so with the Luthier end of the stick because I have some electronics and wood working experience. So a lot of it is new to me. As far as tone I am looking for something that will be a bit unique and will really scream, but, will also play clean. To give you an idea... Country to Old Rock to Hard Rock, leaning towards Hard Rock. That help?

I will shoot you a PM and we'll get together...

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

For that music, you probably don't want those pickups... '59s, Seth Lovers, and Whole Lotta Humbuckers, or maybe Pearly Gates...

Though maybe a Distortion or Custom Custom wouldn't be overkill...

I think the Dimebucker would be perfect in the Bridge...it is super articulate, very clean and cutting even with tons of gains. But I also think its highly underrated as it can get some great Country Cleans. I play mainly Contemporary Christian and Gospel music at my Church, and my main two guitars have SD's in them, the Dimebucker and Screamin Demon.

Definitely shoot jtougas and myself a PM, always enjoy meeting musicians, especially from the forum!

Already did, it is in your inbox...

Well I was listening to the audio samples and I really liked the high outputs and a few of the ones you mentioned.

I like the custom custom and 59's... I can't remember the Whole Lotta HB and the Pearly Gates sound, would have to go back to the audio samples...

Hmm, just checked and nothing is there–no worries though! It could be taking its sweet ole time to get delivered. lol

I've wanted to give the Whole Lotta Set a try, just never took the plunge.

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

ooh, how about C 59'/hybrid bridge, stag mag middle, and PG neck. I bet that would be dope.

Re: New Build by a Newbie need Suggestions

If you really want high-output stuff in the middle and neck positions, get one that has lots of treble in it like a Distortion or Full Shred. I have a FS bridge model in the middle of my BB3(mahogany body and rosewood neck) and it sounds absolutely BEAUTIFUL when paired up with the bridge Invader. It adds a wee bit of mids and compensates the highs the Invader lacks. Full Shred bridge for middle way to go if you're into metal stuff.
