New build: high-gain pedal

So, here's the one I built for my bday...

Apparently I'm into high-gain builds these days.

This is a Dr. Boogie revision 2 (by gauss markov).

Biasing the jfets is a bit of trouble. The recommended 4.5v (half the supply voltage) isn't quite possible with all jfets. They are so variable that biasing Q1 to that level lead to some pretty intense squealing, even after subbing it for all my other 40 something remaining jfets. So it's biased quite lower and the pedal still sounds great. There's probably a bit more tweaking to do to remove a bit of shrillness that I hear in the higher frequencies but that's basically all. I'm assuming biasing by ear is a bit more efficient in the end.

This is my first build with shielded wires. The pedal is very quiet once the bias voltage had been lowered on the first jfet.

Very cool pedal. So far I find it's more "recto-like" than the triple-wreck. Both are great high-gain pedals but the boogie has more of that mid-grit that I hear in boogies.

Red led. Fitting 6 pots and making things look clean is always a bit of a challenge but I think I pulled it off rather well.

I couldn't resist and put the sticker on the back (have a look at the fourth pic).

Cheers!

Re: New build: high-gain pedal

Btw: I just dtarted using the 3pdt daughter-boards I etched at the end of the summer but I really love them. They make for cleaner wiring and help doing it all faster too...

Re: New build: high-gain pedal

very cool!!!

I also dig that it has a bass volume control, I dont like when you step on a pedal and it takes away your bass; that should be controllable.

Yep, I dig the full eq on this one for sure!

Nice Phil....You really are churning out some nice pedals!

Lots of fun! I keep looking for either very cool pedals or more complex ones to challenge myself. There isn't much I can't do at this point...feels good!

I really like that... down to the shade of green. It looks like it would match my SG-X perfectly :smokin:

These aren't for sale...right?

Love the modesty! ;o)

Re: New build: high-gain pedal

In that case, build me a Whammy clone :)

Ha! It's not impossible but the big problem for me there is the enclosure... ;)

I wouldn't sell a direct clone of anything but it isn't the case with this one (DIY project widely available on the web). If you're really interested I'd say we should discuss this via PM...

Love the modesty! ;o)

Hey, if I can do this anyone can my friend and you know that quite well! I don't have your ears or your experience but applying a recipe is quite easy so, modesty or no, I stand by my statement... ;)

I want a Whammy that only bends up 2 octaves, or bends down 2 octaves. I don't need harmonies. Put it in a standard wah enclosure, and give me a toggle switch to choose bend up or bend down. Get to work.

(seriously, I would love to have that pedal)
