New Cab on the way... got a weird question...

I found a good deal on a Genz-Benz G-Flex 212 cab, to go with the El Diablo, and I've got a question.

This thing is ported. I have an SWR Workingman head (200w), and the El Diablo (60/30w switchable).

Do speakers exist that could be put in the cab that would work so that I could use it for both both bass and guitar (not at the same time)?

work? probably. sound good? probably not.

Re: New Cab on the way... got a weird question...

A good bass speaker moves a lot of air at low frequencies, with low distortion in the fundamentals and clear transient response.

The best guitar speaker is a giant paper midrange. The subtle distortions and breakup of a good guitar speaker help color the tone in a pleasing way. Bass speakers don't do this to the same extent. A giant paper midrange does, but they're generally lousy at reproducing low frequencies with authority and clarity.

I'll modify J's post

Work? Absolutely

Sound good? Absolutely not.

Ssssssssssooooooooo you're not using the ISO cab? You probably wana return that thing to your local GC for a full refund.

Re: New Cab on the way... got a weird question...

As soon as they start making custom cabs for all those low tuning djent'ers, you might be in luck. A lot of them putting 18" subs under their 412's

Well, I think the g-flex is kinda aimed in that direction: it's ported (probably enough to qualify as a half back cab, to be honest).

EVM 12L would be my choice to give you the best of both.

The question would be why when you could buy a used 4x10 bass cab ($200+/-) for the same or less than two new EVM type 12" speakers ($300-500) that would always be a compromise.

Actually, if I were buying something specifically for a bass cab, it'd be a 210... I don't gig, and prefer the sound of a 210. I was just hoping I could kill two birds with one stone (I also have a 115 w/ tweeter for the bass, but it's overkill for recording).

Re: New Cab on the way... got a weird question...

hmm
should one get two Carvin 100 watt speakers
and place inside a 2x12 cabinet
then said cabinet would be a 200 watt cabinet

it would probably sound good with a guitar head
it might sound good with a bass as well

Re: New Cab on the way... got a weird question...

Picked up the cab tonight, and now comes the second question: power-handling.

I've been told that under-powering a speaker (or the amp) can kill it just as cleanly as over-powering it. My amp is switchable between 30w & 60w (currently set for 30w for it to be a little more quiet - I'll wait to kick in the 60w until after there's soundproofing). The speakers are rated for 75w each (the cab is kinda cool - you can run individual speakers at 4 ohms each, or both speakers in mono at 16ohms, *or* as an 8 ohm stereo cab (http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&mid=1409&sid=419&cid=93)).

Am I at risk of hurting something (besides my back - this thing is heavy)?

Re: New Cab on the way... got a weird question...

The idea of killing a speaker by under-powering it is far more relevant with PA systems (and maybe bass) than guitar. Specifically the HF drivers (horns) can be damaged by the clipped signal trying to make the driver suddenly stop. Guitar cabinets generally don't have horns, so this shouldn't be an issue. With your particular cabinet I'd be more worried about over-powering it or damaging the speakers with too many low frequencies if you do decide to use it for bass.

On a side note I've actually played bass through a guitar cab loaded with EV-12Ls and in a word it was BRIGHT. I don't know if it was limitations of the speakers or the cab itself, but the resulting tone was much less bassier than you'd expect. I've heard that Steve Harris used EV-12Ls BITD, which would explain how he was able to get such an aggressive, cutting tone with flatwounds.

These are what you want: http://www.eminence.com/speakers/speaker-detail/?model=Delta_Pro_12A

Less high end than a EVM12L, but totally usable for guitar and would hold up for bass easily in that cab.

The stock speakers are totally decent for me in mine, but I don't have any plans to play bass through them.

+1

EVM12L's would definitely be the first choice for alot of people looking for a "Works good for bass and will handle the low end" and "Sounds great for guitar" sort of speaker....But the Delta Pro12A (not the Delta 12a, or Delta 12B, etc... Gotta be the Delta PRO12A), actually Works Great for bass, and Sounds equally great for guitar.
I have a Big old 68' Bassman Cabinet (the huge one thats bigger than a 412) with two Delta Pro12A's in it, I use it pretty frequently With my Bandmaster, or Bassman heads, for gigging, and recording. It sounds great whether its clean playing, Sludgy fuzz goodness, Crunchy Rhythms, or just weird ambient Shoegaze odd-ness.
What really surprised me though was...My Bass Player/Girl Friend's 410 blew a speaker a couple days before a show. So I Told her to use my 212 since I knew the speakers would hold up to the low end, and I just used my old Sunn 412 for that show. It was the best her bass ever sounded on stage up to that point. She still uses it pretty frequently at Practices, and at shows (when I'm not planning to use it).
The Delta Pro's don't sound exactly like EVM12L's, they don't have quite as much High end, feel a little fatter in the low mids, and aren't quite as efficient/loud (they're definitely still very loud speakers). But they're still very very close cousins at the very least. which sounds better for guitar would probably be a matter of amp, situation, and personal preference. I've never heard an EVM12L used with bass, so I can't say they'd do better or worse. But after having heard a Bass Played through two Delta Pro's (albeit in a very over sized cab, though yours is ported so it could have a similar effect), I can definitely say, the Delta Pro's are Great bass speakers, in addition to being great guitar speakers. The price doesn't hurt either.

Of course, that is just my opinion based on my own personal experience. YMMV
