New A Cab Day!

Yeah, speakers coming loose on Marshall cabs is pretty common. Don't know if it's the same on all cabs, but on Marshall cabs, a common "improvement" is to just tighten the bolts and speaker mounts they come from the factory like and to tighten them every once in a while. Never overtighten a speaker, though. There is a risk of warping the frame.

Like I said, Marshall cabs in general are not built the best with the best hardware. At least from the 80's and on. But that's kinda what gives them their sound too, I guess. And all 1960 variations sound so good under the mic.

So Impedence Gurus....I assume I can run one line out the 4ohm into the 1960 and another out the 8ohm in to the MX212.

no. or at least you shouldnt. the outputs are for different taps on the transformer. if you run one 16 ohm cab, use the 16 ohm output. if you run two 16 ohm cabs, use the 8 ohm outputs. if you run one 8 ohm cab, use the 8 ohm output. if you run two 8 ohm cabs, use the 4 ohm outputs. if you run one 4 ohm cab, use the 4 ohm output. if you are running an 8 ohm cab and a 4 ohm cab, id run both on the 4 ohm outputs but you are actually at less than 4 ohms. most amps are fine with a bit of mismatch but it isnt recommended usually

Marshall 1960 4x12 cabs are usually wired in series/parallel with 16 ohm speakers giving the cabinet a 16 ohm load.
If the speakers in the MX212 are both 8 ohms, you could wire them in series and that would give you a 16 ohm load for the cab. Then you won't have a mismatch. At that point, using both with the amp, it would be an 8 ohm load.

modern 1960 cabs are wired for either 4 or 16 ohms for mono, or 8 ohms for "stereo" running two speakers per input. the mx212 is two 16ohm speakers wired in parallel as far as i know

Well, to get a 16-ohm load out of the 2x12, the speakers will need to be 8-ohms, wired series. Wiring the 16-ohm speakers in series would make a 32-ohm load, which you don't want. If he's going to get new speakers for it, may as well get the 8-ohm variety.

yep, i agree with ya. i have a 2x12 that has two 16ohm speakers wired in parallel for 8ohms, a 1x12 8ohm cab, and a 2x10 with two 8 ohm speakers wired to a series/parallel/stereo switch. all depends on what you want to use the cabs with
