New CLATLUB Day

Cute Little Amp That Lights Up Blue..........

Been GASing for one of these for a year plus. So far I'm digging it. Sounds great. It is very different than the Class5.

Much more refined/professional sounding, and has that "clear gain H&K sound"..Even with tons of gain you hear everything (good and bad!) in a chord.

MUCH more sustain than the C5 even at similar gain levels. Supa tight bass, and plenty of it.

Clean channel is very brilliant...reminds me of my old Mesa F50 clean channel...tight..big bass..round. Cranked it gets into that slightly breaking up type of thing (using PAF type outputs).

All the controls are very interactive, took me a bit to dial in the power amp and preamp distortion how I wanted.

Loop works well (Mooer Reecho tape/analog sim on top in the pics).

Lead boost is significantly louder and MUCH more gainy than the crunch channel. My 335 starts to feedback even on 5W. It sounds good too, kinda reminds me of the lead boost on my old Rivera Chubster. I will live on the crunch channel though so will just run a pedal for a boost. I cannot dial the lead boost channel they way I like without messing up the Crunch channel. the TM36 obviously would be a better choice in that regard (lead channel is separate).

On the 5W setting master full up, it is not as loud as the Class5, which is surprising, but it sounds like a full size amp (the Class5 sounds like a miniature amp, just a loud one). 18W mode is not THAT much louder than the class 5 and unlike alot of MV amps, it sounds good at full wattage with the gain up, and Master around 9 oclock or so. 1W mode obviously not optimal, but a bazillion times better than the Marshall low watt setting, and one might be able to get away with it at late night if you are far away from others and/or they are watching TV.

Not sure if its the amp I need, but it sure is a awesome piece of work, and I am having a blast with it. Hopefully I can get a clip up this weekend.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

Intrigued! Can't wait to hear some clips from you with this. I played through, I think, the 5 watt version of this and hated it. Driest sounding distortion I'd ever heard, but it was through a Bugera cab. I don't know if it was the amp or the cab.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

Awesome!!!! Congrats!!!! Ive been gassing for one of those or the 36 since they came out. Ironic you should post today as I spent over an hour at GC yest playing the 18.. They wont get any 36s in unless someone orders one.. I REALLy like that amp. Yest I was running thru a mesa boogie 4x12 and natuarally, it sounded friggin huge!! My only hold back is that under heavy gain, el 84 amps sound kinda wooly to me and I have a tweaker and not sure this would offer me enuff difference to justify the cost. although the looks are awesome! I do love the amp tho and the redbox would be great if I get my comp updated.. Enjoy Bro!!

Look forward to clippage!!

Not sure about the 5, or the cab,but the 18, is a little dry. Not Rivera or (old) VHT dry, but a little. That said Bugera speakers suck IME. I do think having v30 mix with GB30s or 70th anni H30s would probably be the best combo for this amp. Most of the professionallydone clips on the toob are pretty accurate...musikschmidt, the Tommy Thayer clips with the 36, for example.

Bloodrose,I am with ya on EL84s in general. Refused to own an EL84 amp for many years. When they get severly blitzed, I hate them. Very strident. Big problem with the Class5 once it was past noon, and not a big fan of most Voxes either. So far, IME cranking the master is not the thing to do with the TM18...back it off some...just to get the el84s working hard,.and get your thickness with a bit more preamp gain. I have the master around 3 oclock.

I can see the amp benefitting from some better tubes too. Not sure what is in it,but China is plastered all over the glass, and I am never all that impressed with new production chinese tubes. If I keep the amp I will prolly throw in some mullards 84s and some tungsol 12ax7s.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

I figured the dryness had to be coming from the amp for the most part. It's the same cab I tried the Class 5 and a Vox Nightrain head through and they didn't have that characteristic. I complain about that cab every time I go in that shop. I have no idea why they only have that 1 cab on the floor to demo through. They mostly deal in combo amps though so...Line 6 dealers just don't get it lol. AMS is supposed to be getting their stock of the Marshall SL-5's in next month. I think I'll just stick w/ that plan ;)

Re: New CLATLUB Day

Very cool man. I am thinking of one of these as the basis of a home/small rig. Have you tried the direct out? That's the make-or-break feature for me.

I need the fx loop. Not a fan of running my delays in front. Otherwise I prolly would have tried the DSL15 first. But Iwa si trgued by the TM tone from the get go too. PS, go with ZZounds if you do payments. Same company but ZZounds generally offers smaller payments (4 vs. 3) on less expensive items.

I unfortunately am not equipped to do so, my only compy recording setup wentback with the MustangV2 I returned. That said the SessionMusic/Musikscmidt demo of the 18 has a great comparison of laying down tracks mic vs. Redbox. The Redbox does sound pretty good.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

You are not helping my GAS at all. I'm telling you now, it's your fault if I end up with one of these before I really should...lol.

Well you bought a 335 right after I did, so why stop now? ;)

The def are up your alley tonewise.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

So, Class 5 is history? When are you going to step into the lunatic fringe of real amps? (Sub 5W)

Yeah, well, that 335 sorta fell on to my lap. I wasn't actually looking for one.

I've gotta play through one of these amps.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

Maaaaaan those are such cool lil amps.

Congrats!

Thanks Bro!

It goes down to 1 watt, and my Class5 goes to 1/10th of a watt. Been fringeworthy for some time.now ;) the Class5 remains until I am 100% sure on it's replacement. I have been looking to.replace it since I bought it. Love/hate relationship with that amp.

Yeah I was just joshin ya Bro. And yeah, you probably should if you are looking for a replacement for the Vox. I will say I doubt this amp would sound very good with yourCL80s. Keep that in mind.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

EDIT: IF (not F you.., lol) you mean like your East amp or whatnot..sure..when they make one as affordable as what I just got :D

BTW,.does your amp use a 12bh7(?) Ecc82, or whatever as the power tube?

hehe ... Just pullin' your leg is all. :)

No, and I think that's why the amp sounds as big as it does; it uses 2x 12AT7s in push-pull.

I'll play through that Vox until it dies. Going strong since 2006.
I'm curious how it would sound through CL80's.

Re: New CLATLUB Day

Here it is.

Just a room mic'ed clip. My CTS was not cooperating this morning, be kind ;)

Signal 335 (slashers, blue steel 10s)>Orange Box Phaser> TM18>V30. Mooer Reecho set for tape delay in the loop.

5Watt setting. I did this so it would be a better comparison to my Class5.

First clean with master full and and gain up half, then gain up full.

Then Crunch channel for a while. Gain at 3 oclock. Master at 3 oclock. Treble 11 oclock, mids noon, Bass 11 oclock.

Towards end: Lead boost with Phaser.
