New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

Re: New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

Have you considered buying in parts? If you have $500, you can buy a Warmouth body routed for a Floyd and buckers. Then you can grab a squier or fender neck of the bay

Ace's Dean Vendettas turned out real nice! Nice lil projects. No race just pace to make them right and what you want.

Kind of like building model kits too. If you were good at that you might be good at building a guitar out also.

Interesting note - I was really good at building models (really, really, really good like picture on the box good).

Yea, either Aceman or Dominus are the guys to ask on remaking turds into treasures.

Have you got another guitar? You said something about a Schecter. If you do...take the strings off your Magnum along with the pickguard and start at the start. I'd suggest taking the neck off so you don't accidentally spray it.

I was thinking for a while about using a router to knock and entire 3/4in layer off the top of a bad guitar and gluing a new face onto it with those sexy looking top mounted pickups on it.

Re: New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

They are some mad looking guitars man! I think I've decided to leave buying anything at the moment because to he honest I don't really need the guitar right now, but thanks for the pics!

Re: New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

I'm on the fence. If you were in a hurry, I'd say scrap the project and pick up a guitar that's a little further along toward where you want it to be. I mean, you can pick up used guitars with Floyds and Blackouts already installed for $300-$400 all day long. It would cost way more to build the beater up yourself to the same specs.

On the other hand, there is something wicked cool about having a guitar no one else on the planet does...

If you stick with the modding, this is what I'd recommend:

Sand and Paint
Wilkinson trem
Locking tuners
Blackouts pickups
Graphtech nut

As for the 8 string set, what is it that you are looking to get out of it...bigger strings, more tension, etc.???

Re: New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

Another great cheapo guitar to mod for heavy strings and drop tuning is the hardtail ibanez gio models. I have one like an RG series, all black, hardtail bridge. Throw in some hot pickups and heavy strings and it will get heavy. You can find em on Craig's list and pawn shops cheap too.

Re: New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

The LPJ is a tremendous guitar.

The PRS SE line in general is amazing.

A North American HSS Strat clone for under $400 is awesome.

These are all guitars you can buy, not even necessarily require setting up, and go to a gig. That's value.

Not so good at reading an entire post are we?

Stopped after the first nine words then decided to blast me?

"Great" is a relative term and when I made my comment about the cost of those guitars I made a comparison. I've played those guitars. I've owned and played many, many Gibsons from over 50 years ago to today (the "great" ones are not the current ones, by the way). The LPJ is not a particularly bad guitar...I'm not saying or even implying that. But I wouldn't call it "great" let alone "tremendous".

But quality IS, however, somewhat relative. If those guitars are great instruments and the prices are "amazing" to you, that's all well and good. I'm not trying to dis you. As the saying goes...one man's junk is another man's treasure. No problem with that. I've got a lot of (admittedly) junk guitars. And I've got a lot of treasure guitars.

I have played several PRS SE models and none of them were "great" let alone "amazing". Even one I played recently for an hour and tried desperately to fall in love with (because it was gorgeous and I loved the shape of the neck), but for $500 - 600 it just wasn't "great" enough for me to want to buy and put all the effort, time, and $$ into making it amazing. In fact, it was very discouraging because of the lack of quality. However, you may have loved it and thought it was "amazing". That's fine.

I recently bought a $80 brand new guitar and with new pups, electronics, hardware, and minimal setup it is a much "greater" playing and sounding guitar than any of those you mentioned.

Dominus, Aceman and I have made some very fine instruments from Dean Vendettas that cost $100-200. I've even turned some "sawdust" guitars into "great" ones.

I'm not trying to be contentious, just trying to let people see both sides and not be so quick to judge a book by its cover/name.

Re: New custom guitar made from cheap rubbish

My kind of dream is having a really heavy sounding Tele-shaped guitar, because I love Tele-shaped guitars but can't be bothered spending thousands on actual Fender's that may not be worth it for the sound I want, which heavy, HEAVY metal. Since posting the thread I've done more research and have found the LTD TE-406 BLKS (6-string) and the LTD TE-407 BLKS (7-string). I already have a Schecter Omen-7 for my seven string and don't really need another one right now but the 406 sounds enticing...

NO NEED to try and build anything any more.

They don't come any 'heavier' than this.

PROBLEM SOLVED !

Thank you for showing me this, but I live in Australia so with $88 for shipping also, I can't do that. Not meaning to be rude, but I stated in a previous thread that I'm not going to worry about looking for guitars for the moment, but thank you all for the suggestions, the given me good insight on what I should do for my next guitar.
