New Custom-Shop PU---very cool!

Hey dudes---got to try one of Seymour's/MJ's newest creations yesterday. They call it the Stra-90 (or the Strat-90). It is a humbucker made up of one strat coil (6.5k with A-2 rod poles), and one P-90 coil (9k with 2 small ceramic magnets). It all fits under a humbucker cover. I installed it in the neck position of a mahogany Tele. I wired with a 3-way switch for series/split/split. That way I could hear each coil separately, and then the full series output.

Series---15k and BIG sounding (maybe too hot for neck---I'll try it in parallel and see if that does it)

Split-one---P-90 coil. Closest to the neck. Nice P-90 tone. Gritty and chimey.

Split-two---Strat coil. Real strat tone---not a split-humbucker sound.

Overall---very cool, versatile PU with three very different sounds. You will need a mini-toggle to access them all, but well worth it.

That sounds interesting, where can I get one? :D

Re: New Custom-Shop PU---very cool!

wow .. a pretty versatile pickup!

the specs do make it sound like a bridge pickup to me, too

it could certainly give you a lot of possibilities as a bridge pickup alone, or with some other neck pickup, or even a different neck version

very cool

I would also like to recommend a full size HB under a either a P90 soap bar or dog ear cover, single or 4 conductor. Ben Harper uses these pickups a lot and recently ordered 3 more sets. Pete Anderson is also a big fan.

MJ! This is your first post here isn't it?

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

I LOVE the Tapped Tele bridge pickup and Tele ala Strat neck pickup you wound for my '54 Tele. I did a nice long post about it maybe a month ago. I think it's probably the best Tele set I've ever used. The alnico 5 neck pickup is strong, bright and clear...not muffled at all. The alnico 2 bridge pickup has a killer lead tone with either output and when I combine the 6.6K tap of the bridge pickup with the neck pickup I get the bright chimey tone of a vintage Tele pickup set again for rythym.

Couldn't be happier! In fact, I'll be calling you next week to order another set.

Thanks again! Lew/Lew's Guitars

I am kind of excited about this pup. I am thinking of a humbucking Esquire with quite a few options. Damn I ned another guitar like I need.......another guitar!

Re: New Custom-Shop PU---very cool!

That tele combo is a great this is the one Seymour likesto use on his teles. The tap tele has the vintage tele tone with a warmer tone the best tele.

Also available in the custom shop are rail pickups with Alnico 5 magnets. They sound great, especially the Little 59.

How much did that cost? Was thinking about getting a P-90 for the neck of my tele but this seems like a more versatile option.

Thats awesome! I was told a while ago that this was not possible cuz apparently the smaller alnico mags weren't powerful enough... COOL! I wonder how a JB Jr. would sound with this mod?

Re: New Custom-Shop PU---very cool!

MJ, will we be able to send in a JB JR or lil59 and have the magnet swap done there or is there a safe way you could recommend doing it ourselves?
