New DiMarzio Dominion Mark Morton Signature Pickup

Re: New DiMarzio Dominion Mark Morton Signature Pickup

Funny how he has been known for using Duncan pup almost exclusively and yet he gets Dimarzio to make his signature pickups. Sometimes I just don't get how the endorsement things work. I guess how gives you enough money...

He's had the Breeds in his Black Beauty-styled Dominion since the time Wrath came out, 3-4 years ago. Actually, that's when he showed everyone he had DiMarzio's, he probably had some before that. It wasn't like an Yngwie-style, out of the sudden brand jump.

If he used these new Sig models on the new album then I think they sound great.

Re: New DiMarzio Dominion Mark Morton Signature Pickup

I have one and they aren't that great IMO. In interviews he said he used his sig model, a goldtop LP, and some soloists.

I have a set on the way to try out, what didn't you like about it? Mind giving us a few more details?

Re: New DiMarzio Dominion Mark Morton Signature Pickup

Oh sorry for the confusion I meant the sig model guitar isn't all that great.

So its more metal sounding then the breed? About the same brightness and everything?

Yes the breed is more classic toned and the DOM hasMore upper highs due to its ceramic and crunchier.
I can hear what mark was going for :)

I guess I can chime in now that I've had them for about a week or so . . .

I like them. I like them quite a bit actually, but I wasn't looking for vintage or another take on the Breeds I guess (I mean no disrespect Ed Hunter). Lately I've been digging on warm, moderate/high output humbuckers with exceptional clarity to use a base for my tones and these pickups deliver in spades. I installed them in my Washburn HM24 Renegade, which is a Mahogany/Mahogany superstrat with a phenolic fingerboard and the pickups worked out well in it. Maybe it's just me, but I found output to be in the PATB-1 range, so hot, but not stupid hot. PLENTY enough grind to handle any style of Rock/Metal (amp dependent of course) and with my Coreblade I had no issues getting absolutely nasty with them.

I've mentioned before I play more of a black/death metal mix in my current band and I wrote/recorded a song with the guitar this past weekend. The guitar sound is very punchy and tight, excellent clarity on the chords, single notes sound nice and full from the midrange bump. Leads are nice and full as well and have just enough bite to cut through but I never found them to be harsh like an Evo. For kicks I messed around with other styles and they were ok, I'm sure there are better choices for classic rock but the Dominions could work in a pinch since they aren't super high ouput.

Cleans were ok, sounded best when both humbuckers were paired together. I found the pickups alone are fairly dark on clean settings which isn't a bad thing but for cleans I have other go-to pickups (Suhr Aldrich, etc). All in all, I found them to be pretty good. I find they excelled the most when I was laying into them hard and playing tight, triplet based thrashy riffs ala LoG . . . go figure. :scratchch
