New Duncans for Fat Strat???

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

Thanks gents! I am a huge Duncan guy and the Little 59 and Vinstage Stack with 500K pots sound amazing in my American Tele. One of the best sounding guitars I own.

Hmm, that's funny that you said this on April 24th because on April 26th you posted on TDPRI that you didn't like your Vintage Stack because it was "too dark" and were asking about other neck pickups. So what changed between Wednesday and Friday?

The wind direction, the humidity, Katy Perry's hair color… all these things can affect whether papersoul is happy with his rig.

For what it's worth, I went from Fender noiseless to Texas specials to SD ssl1/ssl1rwrp/ssl5 in my EC Strat. I liked the Sd's in my EC Strat the most they were hotter than the Noiseless and as hot yet smoother than the Texas Specials. It's gotta be your taste in the end.

"So, the Fender Diamondback humbucker I really do not like. Sounds too bright, brash and doesn't have the fullness or clarity that the Lil 59 has in my Tele.
I want to check out maybe the Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid, Pearly Gates, 59, or maybe a Dimarzio. '

I've got a strat-type HSS configuration with a JB in the H works like a charm for me It's wired with a tap tap (push on/push off switch to tap it single coil) which means you can get the classic strat quack when you want it and full HB drive when you need it. The JB is very nice sounding clean in both single and double, clear, bright enough but not harsh ("twang" would be the technical term) and drives nicely when cranked. I like that it has a nice sound when I roll the volume down. It is also wired so I can bring in the JB with any other pickup combination which is essential to me now. The JB s in the bridge position. I've been pondering doing another with HsH configuration with JBs bridge and neck but haven't figured out what to put in the middle yet or some other details.

Of course it's all very personal so all we can do is share what we like ;-)
You can here the JB (with the rest of the guitar) here:

For my money, an SSL-1 neck and middle, and a '59 trembucker would be pretty hard to beat.

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

The thing that always annoyed me about HSS strats was that if you went with 500k pots, the single coils sounded too bright and raw, and if you went with 250k pots the humbucker sounded too muffled. I always tried to find humbuckers that worked well with 250k pots. I ended up using the Virtual Hot Paf for years, but now I am back to an SSL-5 single coil in the bridge of my strat. I gave up on humbuckers in a strat.

SSL-1 + SSL-1 + SSL-5 is my personal favorite Strat pickup set.

I like Texas Specials too though.
