new Esquire!

Re: new Esquire!

Groovy! I hope they kept the 'tone bypass' wiring on the back position.

Re: new Esquire!

"3-way switching

The 3-way toggle switch gives you 3 preset tones. In the bridge position the pickup is only connected to the volume control (the tone control is disconnected). This minimal circuitry provides more top-end sparkle than a Telecaster. In the middle position the standard tone control circuit is activated and it functions just like any other tone control. In the neck position the tone control is disengaged, but a tone-shaping capacitor is added that rolls off a lot of the top end and some of the bottom. This setting produces darker tone along with slightly less volume."

Re: new Esquire!

i was so psyched to hear about these then i read the specs and saw "ash body"...well there goes that one for me...still a cool guitar but i guess it looks like warmoth is the only way i'm getting an "XSSIVE" style esquire.

I've always been of the belief that if it isn't ash then it isn't going to sound like a real Tele or Esquire. This is according to my experiences.

...maybe my hands are just weird.

how about that? twice the price of a normal MIM tele with half the pickups.
Hmm...

MIM Standard Tele: $300-$350
New Pickguard: $20
Solder Iron: $7.50-15
Silver Solder (no lead!): $3
Resistors and Capacitors: <$5
Nice new Bridge pickup: $50-75
Knowing you saved yourself about $150 to 200 doing it yourself: Priceless

Edit: However, I think if you like Ash bodies, then this is a good deal, considering it is more expensive than Alder.

Re: new Esquire!

oh i should have said...i'm not a real tele/esquire player so to speak i'm "anti-twang" i put hotrails in all my teles and i play mostly metal and heavy punk so i'm not after typical tele/esquire sound at all. i just find the guitars to be very comfortable to play and have endless amounts of parts available for them to modify them to fit anyones needs.

Re: new Esquire!

These are based on the Classic Series (50s Classic in this case), which sell for around $600 or so new. As I understand it, the Esquire will be $30-50 less than the 50s Classic Telecaster. Same ash body in the same 3 finishes, same hardware, same vintage-style maple neck -- different pickguard and headstock decal. The primary advantage of the Esquire is the unimpeded performance of the lone lead pickup without any neck pickup to exert magnetic drag on the strings. It does seem to make a small but noticeable difference in how the lead pickup sounds (richer harmonics, increased sustain and fatter tone in the Esquire). I would guess that the body is routed for a Tele rhythm pickup under the pickguard as the originals were. This is a cool addition to the Classic line.

Re: new Esquire!

these would be sweet for modding. Well... Teles usually are but because its ash I would love to through a Distortion in one after I route the pickup hole for a humbucker and get a Humbucker fitting bridge. Then I'd revearse the control plate take out the 3 way switch and one of the pots, hook the pickup up the remainig pot for volume and put an imput jack in the left over pot hole.

:)

Re: new Esquire!

wonder if it comes routed for a neck pickup? it comes in the same colors as the 50's tele, could they just skip the installation of the neck pickup and wire it differently? i know they have to put a different decal on the neck but i am just curious to see cause i just made a 50's tele into an esquire.

I think most of the "twang" comes from the bridge and pickup configuration. Ash sounds AMAZING for punk/metal. It's so tight and defined.

Well, considering that it's part of the MIM Classic series like the 50s and 60s Classic Teles, the price is right at that level. Personally, if I weren't just starting to convert my custom Tele into an Esquire, I'd be all over one of these.
