New Family Member In The House

It's a Taylor 314CE. Beautiful guitar.

I drove about 30-45 minutes down to a small Taylor Dealer in Rock Hill SC. What a great little shop, Woody's guitars. The guy had a ton of acoustics to try. Plenty of Taylors, but they all seemed to be the non electric versions, or the higher end 714, 900's, Anniversary models ect, which is fine. They were all beautiful guitars, but one really stood out, and made it's way to the trunk of my car. I wasn't planning on buying tonight, just looking to compare prices and models to what I'd seen in Charlotte, but I came across a deal that I couldn't pass up. One so good that I broke my rule of buying gear on credit cards.

This is a 2002 model 314CE. It does not have the new expression system, but the former Fishman blender system. To me, it's a moot point other than looks. I prefer the expression system because it only has 3 small knobs near the neck, not a cutout for a pre-amp. However, the price was too good to make me hold out for the expression system. The 314CE (new) sells for $1500 give or take, that's 30% off retail. Sometime you can do a little better with cash and some hard negotating. You can get them on eBay for a few hundred less, but you can't try them first, which I have realized is very important with acoustics.

This beauty had been hanging in their second shop (in a much smaller town) for the past 18 months or so. They just don't move a lot of higher end stuff at the small store, so they brought it over to the main location 2 weeks ago or so. The price on the tag said $1299 with HSC, not bad. I went up to inquire about ordering the new 314CE and just got to shooting the **** with the owner. He says, tell you what....if you want the new 314 I can order it, and I'll give you 35% off..... ok, now we're talking. Then he says, if you want to take that one, I'll drop the price to $1100 with HSC.

Decision made. I couldn't pass that deal up, with a Taylor HSC, are you kidding. So, here she is:

Re: New Family Member In The House

One small indentation in the finish just below the pickguard, otherwise clean as a baby's bottom. The top has started to age nicely and darken, it was really noticable next to the brand new Taylors.

New gear rocks!!! Nice score man!

That fireplace looks mighty fine as well...

OT: Did you get that PM I sent about the tubes?

Re: New Family Member In The House

To me, Taylor's new expression system is THE sh*t. It really is amazing just how good it sounds, blows away the competition! Nice looking guitar :)

Re: New Family Member In The House

At first I thought you were going to announce a child being born.

Then I remembered where I was, and the type of sick b@stards who come here (myself included), came to my senses and realized it was probably a new guitar.

Congradulations anyways Jeff!

That looks killer. Did you try many of the other taylor models? I'm just curious if the higher the number 300-900 or whatever, does this mean they get more expensive? Or is each number series just for different preferences and styles?

That's really cool Jeff. Just keep it away from the cats; i.e.- you know how they love to scratch stuff! LOL!

Yup, the higher the series #, the more appointments and nicer wood packages you get. Bird inlays or other nicer ones, better grades of spruce top, rosewood and other more exotic back and side woods, nicer rosettes w/abalone ect.

I played a bunch of them at several different dealers. The one thing I can say is that they are damn consistent. I never did pick up a dog, even if the strings were played out. Annother nice thing is the feel of the guitars is very similar from the 300 series thru the 900's. You don't notice the quality difference as much in the feel as you would say between a Faded Les Paul and a Standard. Once you get into the top of the line Taylors, you get what to me seems like a lot more projection, slightly richer, deeper timbre from the nicer woods. For an average joe like me, the difference in sound and appointments isn't worth the extra $1000-1500. For a serious musician or performer it might be.

The 314 is close enough to my ears. It has real MOP inlays, a nice, simple rosette and a simple pickguard. Rosewood overlay on the headstock and Grover tuners. Satin finish on the sides and back, and gloss on the top. Unlike my electrics, I've realized I prefer my acoustic's to look classic and simple.

That's a good call. When I was looking to get my first Taylor I was sifting through the lower end models on up through the more expensive ones and loved them all. I ended up getting a 910 as a gift from my parents a few years ago. It's great, but doesnt necessarily sound alot better than a lower end Taylor. Either way, I LOVE it. :)

I had to take another look at your new baby. The back is so pretty it makes me want to touch it, really. :) It's really nice looking.

Re: New Family Member In The House

Nice guitar......Taylors are great....your right they are very consistent as far as acoustics go.......The 300 series is a great choice...they record easily and articulate well....should keep you happy for quite a while.

Taylors also hold on to a good resale value as well.....take good care of her and keep her humidfied(depends on were you live)..

Congrats
