New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

What was the last forum pickup? The one that got finished was Fuglies I suppose. But I vaguely remember another but don't remember the details.

I thought it was a neck to go with the 59/Custom, but they were using a Custom/Jazz? Or something like that. There’s a big long thread that I think ended with LtKojak saying it was meh.

... and the whole thing died?

I kinda remember but am a bit fuzzy on the details.

Yeah if the forum wasn’t in agreement behind it, Duncan was not going to put it into production.

I’ll look for the thread later, but I’m on my phone right now.

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Now here me out fellas, in my not so humble opinion this next idea is the best one on here:

A bridge humbucker that sounds like a beefy single coil.

Here's why. It's not a radical departure from the norm like some of these ideas, so it will be more likely to sell. There are some pickups that serve a similar function on the market, but none designed with this as their chief goal so it's a relatively blue ocean in the pickup world. It would require no large orders of new magnets and would require little changes to the machines.

This pickup would feature coil imbalance to scoop the lower mids so that the humbucker could be wound hotter to roll of the ice pick tone of a Strat bridge to a more humbucker-like upper mid push. When split, it would sound closer to a traditional strat bridge. I haven't decided if this would be a better idea as a single or full sized humbucker, but the goal would be the same, to allow people to have a balsier bridge tone while still having some Strat mojo. While this may sound like it's been done before, I could argue that it hasn't been done well.

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Oh, I forgot about the name.

I haven't quite thought of something yet, but I think whatever the name of the pickup we come up with should reference the outbreak, but it should be subtle enough that it doesn't grow stale as soon as this all blows over. Like if you knew it was a reference to Covid, you'd get the joke, but it isn't glaringly obvious.

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Nobody else wanting an Invader "airborn-attack" trembucker version?,,,wound a bit lighter for a smidget more clarity (14dcr range), w/large silver or gold hex-bolt poles for a bit sharper attack.

This already exists. It’s the Custom Shop S-Deco. I have a T-Deco version (telecaster sound in Humbucker format). It is the best bridge pickup I’ve put in my Gibson type guitars. It’s like an even better version of a Jazz bridge.

Well currently that is neither a production pickup nor even on the CS website anymore. But I really liked the A4 version when I had it, so I'd be down to see that become a standard model.

FWIW - The Custom Shop is a little like In-N-Out Burger. They have a secret menu of items that you can get, you just have to know what to ask for. Any pickup they’ve ever made, they can make for you. If it’s a pickup they can’t make due to some licensing/contract issue, they can find a way to make you one close that sounds right without infringing on anyone’s deal. They can also do rewinds of pickups they don’t normally build, since that falls under repair, and not making/marketing a new competing product.

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Indeed, the Custom Shop can/will make pretty much any pickup, even if it's not listed anymore (with very few exceptions)

But it would be cool to have another forum original after all these years and if they can do it at a discount, even better :)

P.S.- I don't know why people feel like reliving failed attempts from the past. We've had more successes than failures as a forum and this is just for fun. Heck, SD isn't even open for business right now, which means this is solid "idea" time, so keep those ideas coming!

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Yeah, it's interesting that we haven't seen many hybrids being tested with the relatively "newer" models (other than the Pegasus).

I'd definitely try out a Nazgul/BW hybrid.

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

How about a medium output, punchy, present yet not trebly pickup set? Something that is percussive like a 6K a5 strat pickup but not trebly and/or shrill, powerful yet clear. A8 for power, screw coil with PATB kinda coil and the slug coil with either slugs or Allen heads. ~12.5K with #43? And a neck pickup to go with it...

The immunizor? :D

:scratchch

Have you tried the newer Slash set?

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Those are hot A2P's no? Still with that A2P vibe but wound a bit hotter...

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Cool... thanks.

I love hot PAF's, sorta wound to ~8.7-9 in the right guitar. (In a full sounding LP, sometimes it becomes an overkill and 8.00K PAFs like Seths sound great.)

Re: New Forum Pickups: Quarantine Theme?

Does anyone remember the specs on the Crazy 8? That was a great pickup.

Maybe we need a Roaring 20's set? Revive the Crazy 8 bridge and give it a matching "Crazy-19" neck pickup that's a little different than the current PA neck model?

Alternatively, I know MJ wound Evan a '78 model inspired Parallel Axis pickup and he said it was incredible, one of his absolute favorites. Somehow it was different than the PATB-3, which is very similar in spec. Maybe that could be something?

All this PA talk really makes me lust for a QuaranTele PA set, though! And I'm not a Tele guy, LOL! PA Tele pickups are genuinely a missing item from the whole SD lineup.
