New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

I didn't even know they still made the swamp ash special. But anyways, seems a lot to me like a CE 24 with out the rosewood board and a different set of pickups.

Yah, they still make the Swamp Ash Special. I've got a black & rosewood '04 that I dig a lot. I'm not much of a PRS fan but I've always liked their bolt-on guitars, something about them feels a little more "right" to me then the set neck 24's and IMO the SAS really rides the Gibson/Fender line that PRS "is".

Anyway...I must be a freak because I want to check one out. I'm more interested to know what the wiring is then anything else. Two buckers, coil tape & a 3-way blade? Hmmmm... It looks like simple refinements to an otherwise off the shelf design. The mahagony body with a bolt-on maple neck seems kinda cool and if the "special neck shape" feels anything like a standard 50's or 70's Tele neck then it'll be even cooler IMO. Don't know if I'd buy one or not...depends on what it's actually like in my hands.

But I don't see any a PRS Vee or any other shape coming into the picture any time soon. As much as I love their guitars, they need to do something a little more daring... Like a custom 22 or 24 available in white with a smaller heel, black hardware and a floyd rose! When that day comes, I will buy another PRS.

I don't know about the smaller heel but they'd probably build one with a Floyd...they are a custom guitar company. Even the ones hanging at Scam Cash were ordered by someone.

Johnny Hiland is amazing, too bad this guitar isn't. :(

I've played Swamp Ash Specials and I like models like the McCarty more (my personal fave).

I've never even heard Hiland play...at least not that I can recall. I'm sure he's rippin but I've only seen him in ads.

And what makes 'ya say that the guitar isn't "amazing"? Have you played one?

I just don't see Johnny doing the country thing with a split PRS humbucker. One of my favorite features with the SAS was the single coil in the middle and somehow they managed to miss that with this model. The SAS was a solid guitar, but it looks like they took part of what made the SAS so unique away. Oh yeah, and the new age 513 bird inlay is terrible looking

When I saw the thread, I was expecting some cool new PRS design, but it's still the same 'ole PRS thang. I've played my fair share of them and even thought of buying one, but the voicing wasn't quite right *for me*.

Yah I dig having the vintage rail in the middle & since it's black pickup on black body it sorta blends in from a distance so it doesn't look like I'm playing some H/S/H ivebeenhad guitar. I don't think they put the single coil in on the new model because it wouldn't have fit. The Hiland's a 24-fret...SAS is 22, leaves a little more room inbetween the 'buckers.

I know what you're sayin'. Yeah...too bad they didn't really bush the envelope a little bit...mount a Tele bridge on a flat top PRS body with a countoured back or something. But this thing was probably made to Hilands taste and who's to say that he didn't want something radically different then a Tele?

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

We heard Johnny playing several times at the PRS booth. Couldn't see much unfortunately. The one time I was able to squeeze in up front and close for a better look, it appeared that he was playing a PRS Single Cut! As for Johnny's playing, he's good! He's one of those country/jazz kinda guys...someone with the chops to play whatever he wants. But when you start playing country or rock really fast and with all those extra notes, scales and modes it does start to resemble bluesy jazz. Jimmy Bryant sounded similar although more aggressive and over the top than Johnny. Lew
