So about a month ago i traded a cheap ibanez rg in at a local guitar shop. i noticed this little gem laying on a case behind the counter. well i picked it up today. and damn am i impressed. I've never been too much a fan of the les paul style guitars but this thing plays like a dream. my first experience with Dimarzio pups and I'm not too impressed but given what it is and the price i picked it up for, i cant complain. the real question is what kind of pickups to swap to??? so many choices.

It's not the fact that it has Dimarzios, it has the wrong ones for you. The PAF 36ths might not be what you're looking for, judging by the fact that you have a 333XL. :D

You'll see why the LP design is so popular, even though it's not a Gibson. Maybe Alnico 8 magnets will change things for the lowest amount of money....or maybe a C5/PG will work?

I'd throw a Custom/PG in that thing, crank the amp while standing in front of it in my skivvies and let it vibrate my wiggly parts.

I was considering picking up the gold top version of that guitar a while ago, it was sick, played amazingly. But the 24.75" scale didn't get along with me too well. But, enjoy!

I have an EC-401W. It started out with EMG-81/-60 humbuckers. Thanks to the Quik Connect wiring harness, I have been able to try other active pickups with varying results.

On the 24-fret 400 series models, the pickups that sound good are:
Bridge position - EMG-81X, EMG-85X, Duncan Blackouts Metal
Neck position - EMG-60X, EMG-HA, Duncan Live Wire Classic II N

I imagine that the EMG-JH set should work well, if that is your thing. The new EMG Glenn Tipton model pickups could be interesting. Fishman Fluence should be worth a try but the rewiring could be complex.

I love the white or cream open coil passive look for LPs.

If you are going to stick with passives, go Super Distortion (b) and PAF Pro (n). Actives, EMG 81 (b) and 60 (n). I have this in my ESP Eclipse and LOVE them! The 81 seems much more mellow in a LP style guitar.

I can never understand why someone actually says this. There is only a very subtle difference in feel between the different scale lengths (yes, they have their differences in feel and tone). But I have never known a good guitar player that couldn't jump back and forth between Fender and Gibson scales. I have over three dozen guitars of various scale lengths and "get long" with, and love, all of them (and I don't consider myself a "good guitar player").

If you don't "get along" with the 24.75" scale length, I would suggest that you practice more and learn how to play guitar.

Quite possibly because i rarely tune above C, and i dont like my strings flopping around. No need to be elitist because you dont understand something someone says or does. I prefer baritone scale guitars, i dont like the feel of shorter necks, how does that detract from my skills as a guitarist?
