New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

If you have a phone number they can do a reverse look up. Even if it is a cell phone. The fact that the guy wanted to meet at a store lets you know something. I had a guy going to sell an amp in another city. I offered to meet at his house. He said he'd meet at a gas station. I said bring a signed statement there is nothing wrong with the amp. He got p.o.ed and took away the offer.

Good luck Saggy. Sorry to see you got took.

I spotted the strange headstock shape as soon as I opened this thread, and I'm pretty far from being an expert. But this is one of the reasons I refuse to buy guitars from anyone but an established dealer. Because some of the fakes are a lot harder to spot than that, and I can't always tell.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Craigslist... always an adventure.

I sold a drum kit on there a few years back...

Stated in the ad... moving sale... "CASH ONLY"

Guy shows up at my place with a small amount of cash and a 1/2 sack of some really choice weed. lol

If I wanted pot, I would've said "payment by weed only" in the ad, there, Beavis.

Some other burnout wanted me to pick him up at his house, drive him to MY house to check out the kit, then drive him to bank if liked it and then take him AND the kit back to his place. WTF?!? Get a car 'ya bum! At least call a taxi...

Sorry to hear 'ya got burned man. But looking at the first photo I spotted it was a fake too... headstock shape, binding, control layouts, even the quality of inlay work is WAY below Gibsons par.

Not to mention that "white" standards are EXTREMELY rare beasts...

Hope it all works out.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Good news!!!

The seller returned my calls tonight, after the detective spoke with him. He's tied up with his job at O'hare, but refunding me this weekend. He has filed a report against the original seller with HER full information. :-D

To be honest, I was pretty tempted to trade up for a custom shop Ibanez.. heh heh. I guess happy endings do happen, afterall.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

I wouldnt wait tillthis weekend.Every second you let eclipse radically diminishes your chances of seeing any settelement. Call him up and tell him you need to make a settlement on the purchase immidatly, and that you will meet him at work tommorow. Dont take no for an answer.Cut him some salck on the refund. Tell him youll take 500.00 back. I would. you walk away wiser, and if you pocket 5 bills youre money ahead at this point.chalk the 100 bucks up to experience.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Chicago is about 2.5 hours north of here, that's why I'm fine waiting. Dude said he's training to be a cop, ironic huh?

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

if it plays well...offer him like 150 bones, get the rest back and keep the axe, lol. if he was scamming you then he will say yeah and you get a good axe for a good price

knockoff or not...ive played some **** good knockoffs. and im sure you know what a good guitar feels like. but yeah, make sure it has a truss rod first

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Glad to hear you got the guy, and should get resolution. A couple of years ago on ebay I almost had this happen to me, would have been out like $550 but I had some luck guardian angels(2 different ebayers) send me a couple of emails saying 'don't pay the guy, that's a fake'. Honestly the deal turned me off of les pauls for quite a while, I don't even look for them on ebay, and hardly look at them on clist. Usually from what i've seen, price in a way determins if it's real or not(anything $600 or less is usually a faded or a fake, maybe a studio-never have I seen anything higher end than a studio at that price).

FWIW,I wouldn't even think about keeping the guitar,as mentioned above...
Get your cash & the Hell outta there...

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

I'm not holding my breath! The guy works at an airport!

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

RED FLAGS!!!

I would take the detective with me to do this transaction. I think he would be interested to hear this guy's spiel. This is way to loose.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

You can't just wait until the weekend and show up alone.

Apart from the fact that he might not have been honest with the stated intention he might change his mind. Or somebody else he got into trouble with shows up at his house and demands cash he owes him, and then he won't have any when you show up.

Did you verify that the person he's indicating now actually exists?

Get a bulky friend or two and show up this evening.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

I agree. I'd ask the detective to accompany me. He can then get all the info on the girl this guy got it from.

I agree that you should see if the detective will go with you to meet the guy. I'm not sure whether to believe he honestly didn't know it was a fake or not, but either way, if you take the detective with you the seller won't be able to jerk you around any further if he is indeed a fraud. If you like the guitar let him keep 100-150 of the money and get the rest refunded. As said if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. Personally I would have been suspicious to why he was selling it for so cheap and had Gibson check the serial number. Just for my own piece of mind did Gibson ever release white standards? I didn't think they did and kinda thought this whole situation was a bit fishy because of that....

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

So, did this get resolved? What happened?

First of all, the guy is lying about buying it from a girl. Here was his story...

That is indeed the Craig's List ad. I have the seller's email, phone, and car description, but he had me meet him at a Barnes and Noble lot, which is unsettling now. His story was that he bought it very recently from a Slash wannabe who replaced the plastic tuners with Grovers, and also upgraded some of the hardware (hence the Gibson speed knobs) which are indeed on backwards.

If you catch up with the guy, get his license plate number while you're getting your money back.
Show the detective this paragraph, which contradicts his story about the woman.
