New guitar. A rare breed.

I can build almost any electric guitar I want. Strat? sure. Tele? whatever. les paul? Bread 'n butter. But there's one guitar that I just can't build. The materials are just impossible to find, the pickup is impossible to find and the tools... well. Just no.

it's the Dan Armstrong Ampeg ADA6 Plexi guitar. I always had my eye on that guitar and after nearly 10 years I finally got a chance to play it 7 months ago. I sold off some amps and got a chance to trade an amp for this guitar and so I did. A small review.

The guitar smokes. My oh my. sustain for days, very versatile sounds and just a great guitar overall in its own merits and right. The guitar comes with 2 pickups: one humbucker and one singlecoil. The humbucker isn't overly hot, perhaps like a pearly gates? The playability is good. not smashing, good. The upper fret access is fine, the frets are nice but I know I'll have to tweak it for a long, long time before it's finally up to my specs. The frets need a good polish, the fretboard needs a polish too, the neck is finished in a satin gloss and that has to go, too. The neck needs to be straightened a bit and DAMN those strings that were factory fitted are horrible. I know it can play amazing, the raw material is there. But the playability may also be simply getting used to. The thing I really hate is the lack of treble and that's due to the horrible pots, switch and jack. It's all asian junk. I mean, c'mon. A guitar that was 1500 bucks new shouldn't be loaded with brandless, horrible mini-pots. Never. CTS, Bourns, fine. But not this. The switch is wobbly and doesn't work that well after 3 good bashes, the jack is noisy. I do love the knobs though and the tone I am able to coax from this guitar is already amazing.

I've only played two plexiglass guitars, but they've both sounded terrible. Makes me wonder what Dan Armstrong did to make this one sound decent . . .

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

Neck joint is deep and long, deep inside the body. the pickups are great. I mean, if this guitar would be horrible, guys like Dave Grohl, Joe Perry, Ron Wood and many others wouldn't play it. It's an iconic guitar.

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

It was part of the collection of a collector, he never really played it. I don't know if he got it new or second hand, to be frank. I dont know the year, I think it's a recent reissue judging by the neck, the heel and some other parts. I really hate the fretjob. I've been playing it for the last few hours and it needs a lot of work.

I remember seeing those used in Mackenzie River Music in Eugene back in the 80's. The guitars and the basses, in clear and in the smoked transparent. I remember them being on the heavy side.

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

Did it really have the original strings on it? That's kinky. And is the bridge made of wood?

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

Yes, the bridge is made of wood. My theory is that the wood bridge (with brass saddles!) helps to give it a more 'traditional' sound than than without it (the strings are now anchored fully in wood).

I doubt MJ or SD could make a pup like this. The mounting system is just damn complicated to replicate, not to mention the connections. but why would I wanna have something else? the guitar sounds so DAMNED amazing!

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

Joe pretty much uses his vintage DA for slide work on Draw The Line live and occasionally one or two other songs.

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

that's one of the models the Ampeg made just a few years ago. almost bought one at one time, but then I de cided against it.

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

True. May i ask why you didn't go forward with your purchase? I seriously can't get enough of my Plexi. It's like a thunderstorm in my amp when I plug it in. But that goes for all of my better (best) guitars.

Re: New guitar. A rare breed.

I wanted to build a Plexi guitar a while back but couldn't find a cheap enough block of it. Looks sweet man
