New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

hi dudes...

BC_Rich_U.S.A_Custom_Assas.jpg

i´ve bought this afternoon this bc rich assasin with an emg 81/85 set... and after playing it at home for a couple hours i have decided to put emgs on my other bc rich... holy sh*t, the sound of this pickups are amazing... i like duncans so much and dimarzios also (well not so much as duncans, but they are good pups) but this ones are awesome...for what i´m playing right now (prog/thrash metal - hard rock)

so...which one would you choose for my other bc rich (for prog metal also, but this axe will be oriented to a lead guitar more than a rhythm one...)?

i know some people here have used a 85 bridge pup or a 85 set in their axes...
i really like the way this set sounds but i read about the 85 at bridge sounding bigger and, in other threads, that the 60 is by far the best emg neck pup for cleans and distorted runs...

Thanks a lot

sorry for not answering your post but... **** that is a nice guitar.

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

id go for an 85/60 setup

btw, badass lookin guitar

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

that guitar is so sweet man. idk much about ur guitars construction but i am a fan of the 85/60 setup.

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

Either an 85/89 or an 89/89 ;).

James Murphy get's the most insane lead tones out of 85's and SA's (the single coil mode of the 89).

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

thanks guys... this guitar (above pic) is a maple neck thru with koa wings and ebony board.

the other bc rich is a maple neck thru with alder wings and ebony board , but floyd equiped.

this guitar is brigther sounding altough the "hardtail" bc rich is ligther... so i think i should go for a fatter humbucker.

btw, about the 89 for neck... it seems like a cool idea, to have a single coil also on the guitar, thanks jeff, but are the 89 clean sounds better than the 60?

thanks a lot for the replies guys

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

If you want a bassier tone in the bridge position, go with the 85 and a 60
for the neck. The 60 sounds way better in the neck than the 85 for clean & for solos IMO but if you want more variety with the tones, go with two
EMG-89's for fat & heavy crunch tones and great single-coil clean tones.

If you don't care to have the single-coil tones then go for the 85/60 combo.
If you want the most powerful edgy tone from the bridge position then go for my favorite, the 81/60 combo but the 81 might sound too bright on an Alder body.

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

I liked my 81/81 combo in my ESP M-II. I didn't find it too bright or anything, very balanced. They suited each other really well too.

I'd probably go 89/89 myself these days, though, for the bigger versatility.

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

I vote for the 85/60.

BTW, I LOVE the looks of that axe!!!!!!!!

i´m having a hard time with which neck pup to choose, i see the 85 for bridge is players favorite choice (how about harmonics?...if the 85 has as much as the 81 on my guitar i´ll be happy)

the single coil clean tones of the SA inside the 89 would be better than the 60 clean tones, arent they?

i had a ltd ex400 with a 81 set and while i liked the bridge pup, the neck pup just didn´t make sense to me

thanks for the replies

i like single coil tones better (more articulate and natural) but it is up to taste.

The 60 is better for clean rhythm use, though I find it a touch boring and actually prefer the 85 for cleans (sounds more bluesy IMO). For leads the 85 is fatter, has better harmonics, and is better for legatto.

I hate the 85 in the bridge. Too bassy and too smooth. Not percussive/aggressive enough on the attack, and the bass slurs the definition on my palm mutes. I much prefer the 81.

I've gone through every combo of 85/60/81....and I've settled on the 81b/85n setup.

I dont care for EMGs at all, but i must post and say that is a SWEET guitar!!! Where can i find richs like that in the states? Even pics lol..

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

I'd definitely go for a 60 in the neck....it's probably my favorite neck pickup ever. Articulate yet warm....capable of nice chimey cleans without the boomy bottom end.

i have no idea :D:D:D, the guy at my nearest store went to the states and saw a few handmade ones at NAMM, 4 assasins (i´ve bought 2 of these), 2 mockinbirds, 2 warlocks... most of them are 2K or 2.5K € priced here, so i think you can go to a guitar center and buy a couple ones for 2k $...or just call a dealer at your state...

http://www.guitarasylum.com/home.htm

and, that site has a lot of custom shop axes, jacksons, esps, brian moores...

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

I'm very satisfied with EMG 81 on bridge position, I can get good overdive tones to play some classic rock or hard rock stuff and with high gain, I can get all kinds of metal tone, like Megadeth, Exodus, Obituary and **** like that..
For the neck, I'm using EMG85, it's nice, but doesn't sound as fat as I wanted. Never tried the EMG 60, but people say it's the best neck EMG pickup.

thanks for the replies again... i like the 81/85 set on this particular axe because of the dark tone the emgs takes out of it... but a 81 on an alder bodied gutiar will be too overkill, i mean, too thrash/death metal oriented, the 85 seems like a more versatile pup (lead and rhythm)...i´m ordering finally the 85/60 set instead of the 89 for neck, because i won´t really use the single coil... i´m getting a presonus firebox anytime soon, so i hope i could start recording something...

have a nice weekend ;)

see ya

Re: New guitar at home, need advice about EMGs

I'm not much of a metal/prog guy, but that there is a nice lookin' plank of wood!

FWIW, I use an 81 in the bridge of a Strat and I play stoner/doom/sludge......ala Sabbath, Crowbar, ect. It only sounds like a death/thrash pickup if you play on it in a death/thrash manner. For slow, sludgy stuff it's great because it cuts through the gain and you can hear the individual notes.
