New Guitar Day, Custom Strat Content! Billy Corgan Replica!

This is a continuation of 70's Strat Project. I wanted to build a Billy Corgan Signature Strat, but the one that was sold was far away from what any of his main strats were. I wanted the blue 70's one he has,

Long story short. I ordered a custom body from MJT. Mark was more than willing to help with my custom order. He was extremely nice and responded quickly. Took about 9 weeks tho. It's a heavy swamp ash, exactly what I wanted. The other parts I got from random places. The white MIM is my bat strat replica, loaded with lace sensors. I won't list all the details, feel free to ask. Now to the pictures:

Thanks dudes. It's kinda funny, MJT usually does the opposite, sell relic'd guitars, I wanted a brand new looking axe and they delivered!

Nice!

Question though, why didn't ya make it a hard tail like Billy's?

Good question. I thought about it for a while, and thought if I decked the trem and put at least 4 springs, it would sound pretty close to a hardtail. And in my research, the basic differences between a hardtail and trem strat is the hardtail has more sustain and more of a low end presence. If you heard these pups they definitely don't need anymore bass, and it has a very long sustain.

That's awesome. A friend of mine is a crazy SP fan, he also cobbled together a Strat with that same color scheme, but with Lace Sensors. I don't care what the critics say, I love the Zeitgeist era, and his tone, especially in IAGW. I was never a big fan of Lace Sensors, I had some in the late 90's, but they seemed lifeless. The BC set also splits real well, and with that as an option with push/pulls, the DiMarzios can cover their catalog.

Do your guitars have the full DiMarzio BC pickup set? How do you have it wired?

I also did another BC inspired Strat also with a black Aerodyne http://i.imgur.com/NDo0UEQ.jpg The wiring is totally different though, and I wasn't willing to go hard tail either.

Lace sensors aren't bad at all. I really like the bsr combo in the white. Actually that's still my #1 axe at the moment. I'm just too attached to the mim neck, it really feels perfect to me. What is IAGW?

Yeah it the bc1&2 and the chopper in the middle. Wired normally, but has the bridge and neck splits in positions 2&4 (how the real BC strat is wired). How does the bc2 in the bridge split? Does it sound decent? Never tried it, but I heard that minihb's don't split well. Hardtail strat was out of the question. I'm sure there is a difference vs my decked trem but it's probably a small difference.

Sorry, IAGW is the "If All Goes Wrong" DVD from 2008. I love this performance from that DVD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87JjV4WDDC0

The BC-1 and BC-2 sound amazing split. They sound much closer to typical Strat pickups than the average split humbucker. Lots of character, relatively full sounding. I'd definitely recommend installing a push/pull to split the bridge and neck, since one push pull can split two pickups. I did something different, I got a 4 gang 100K pot off ebay and variably split all three pickups at once. It truly is the most versatile Strat I can imagine.

I deck my trems also, IME you have to use all five strings and clamp the spring fork up against the body to get sufficient tension. I can tell if it's not enough, because I'll pull back on the wammy and hear extra potential for bridge to body contact.

I'll have to check out that dvd. That's good to hear they split well. I'll have to install a push pull or similar. The coolest thing about those 3 pups is even tho they are minihb's they really don't de-strat the strat. I can still get the quack. I still have somewhat of a treble cut, not as much as a sc, but enough for my liking. I put 4 springs on mine, I still use the tremolo from time to time, it's fun!
